Top 15 Jobs Declining in the US

In the next ten years, finding jobs like switchboard operators, telemarketers, and engine assemblers will likely become more difficult. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) recently released new data showing which jobs are expected to shrink the most between 2023 and 2033.

The job of word processors and typists is expected to decline the fastest, with a 38% drop in employment, meaning about 15,200 jobs will disappear. This is part of a broader trend where certain jobs are becoming less needed due to changes in technology and how businesses operate.

Here are the top 15 jobs that are expected to shrink the most in the U.S.:

This table summarizes the occupations expected to shrink the most from 2023 to 2033, along with their projected job losses and median annual wages.

None of these jobs have a six-figure salary, but a few do offer wages above the median annual pay for all jobs, which is $48,060.

While word processors and typists are expected to shrink the fastest, cashiers will see the biggest overall job loss, with 353,100 positions disappearing by 2033, a 10.6% drop. Customer service representatives and general office clerks are also expected to lose over 100,000 jobs each.

The BLS says these job losses are mainly due to the growth of e-commerce and advancements in technology, including artificial intelligence, which are reducing the need for traditional sales and office support roles.

“E-commerce and technology advances are expected to reduce the demand for sales workers, leading to job losses,” the BLS explained. “Similarly, automated systems and related technology, including AI, are expected to reduce the number of office and administrative support jobs.”
