Incoming President Donald Trump has declared that a deal has been reached with Hamas for the release of hostages held since October 7, 2023. Trump announced the breakthrough on his Truth Social platform, stating, “We have a deal for the hostages in the Middle East,” amid reports of an imminent ceasefire agreement.

While President Joe Biden and his administration have been diligently working to secure a deal before Biden’s term concludes, Trump’s announcement came first, suggesting his electoral victory in November played a crucial role.

“This EPIC ceasefire agreement could have only happened as a result of our Historic Victory in November, as it signaled to the entire World that my administration would seek Peace and negotiate deals to ensure the safety of all Americans and our Allies,” Trump elaborated.

President Biden has recognized the ceasefire, highlighting the ongoing negotiations needed for a permanent truce. The announcement came after Trump warned of severe consequences if the hostages were not released by January 20th.

Marco Rubio, the likely incoming Secretary of State, noted during his confirmation hearing that Trump’s advisors worked closely with the outgoing Secretary of State Tony Blinken’s team, with Qatar acting as a crucial intermediary.

The Qataris are expected to hold a press briefing soon to formally announce the deal. Meanwhile, the White House has stated that President Biden will also address the media regarding the ceasefire. Under the terms of the agreement, 33 hostages are anticipated to be released this weekend, marking the first group of several in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office has indicated that while a ceasefire deal is being negotiated, some details remain unresolved. However, there is hope that the final terms will be solidified shortly. The conflict, which began with a Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, has resulted in over 46,000 deaths, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
