Tyler Perry Wrote Full WWII Movie Script After One Meeting With Kerry Washington

Kerry Washington is bringing an important piece of Black American history to the screen in her latest film, The Six Triple Eight. In this movie, Washington not only stars but also serves as a producer.

The film, directed and written by Tyler Perry, tells the story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only predominantly Black women’s unit in the U.S. Army Corps to serve overseas during World War II.

Washington plays Major Charity Adams, the leader of the battalion, while actress Ebony Obsidian plays Officer Lena King, who recently passed away at 99. King was known for vividly recalling her time in the battalion, where she and her fellow Black women soldiers worked hard to deliver mail to troops, boosting their spirits during the war.

The battalion’s motto, “No mail, low morale,” highlights the importance of their mission.

Tyler Perry shared that after just one long meeting with Kerry Washington, he was inspired to write the entire script. “After a few hours with her, I had the whole script in my head,” he told People.

Perry stressed the importance of telling stories like this, especially when the contributions of certain groups are often forgotten or ignored. “It’s important that these stories have their voice and their place because so many of us are trying to erase and write out the history of the contributions of certain people,” he said.

Kerry Washington expressed how proud she is to be part of the film, praising Perry’s work in bringing this untold story to life. “Tyler has done an extraordinary job turning this story into a moving film that lets you understand the hearts and minds of these brave American heroes,” she said.

Kerry Washington believes the movie’s themes are still relevant today. “Many of us know what it feels like to be marginalized, underestimated, and tested,” she said. “This movie shows what’s possible when we come together to face life’s challenges. It’s about fighting for the American dream, even when others think it’s not meant for you.”

Before she passed away, Lena King saw an early version of the film and approved it. When she watched the scene where her battalion salutes, she saluted along with them. Perry called it a “beautiful moment.”

The Six Triple Eight will premiere on Netflix on December 20.
