At Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in North Carolina, Willie Mack III is capturing attention with his debut at the U.S. Open. At 35, Mack’s journey to this major championship showcases his perseverance and resilience.
Mack turned professional after graduating from Bethune-Cookman University in 2011. Despite having seven PGA Tour starts and full playing status on the Korn Ferry Tour last year, most of his career was spent on lower-level mini-tours.
His breakthrough came after winning a playoff at a U.S. Open qualifier, securing his place in the prestigious event.
Growing up in Flint, Michigan, Mack learned golf with his father, Willie Jr. Despite the decline in local golf courses, they persevered.
“When I first turned pro, I won the money list on the Florida Pro Tour,” Mack shared in an interview with Golf.com. “I missed the final stage of Q-School by two strokes.”
Despite early success, Mack faced numerous setbacks. “Things just started going the other direction,” he said.
This included living out of his black Ford Mustang to pursue his dreams.
Willie revealed the sacrifices made to chase his dream. “In the winter, you clearly can’t play golf in Michigan, so just stick it out, and I’m glad I did,” he said.
Mack spent several nights in the confines of his black Ford Mustang with tinted windows to pursue his goals, but his story is more than the hardships he faced.
It’s a celebration of his ability to overcome adversity and serve as an inspiration to others. As one of the few Black players in golf, Willie is pursuing more than just personal goals. Inspired by Tiger Woods, Willie hopes to encourage more people to play golf.
His story is not just about struggles but also about inspiring others. As one of the few Black players in golf, Mack aims to motivate others, inspired by Tiger Woods.
Mack’s debut at the U.S. Open is more than a personal victory; it symbolises hope and inspiration for aspiring golfers, emphasising the importance of perseverance and dedication.
