Rep. Jasmine Crockett Questions Trump’s Mental Fitness After Off-Script West Point Speech

U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) is urging her Republican colleagues to examine former President Donald Trump’s mental fitness following his controversial remarks at a West Point commencement ceremony over Memorial Day weekend.
In an interview with MSNBC’s Alex Witt, Crockett criticized Trump’s speech to the United States Military Academy’s Class of 2024, calling it unfocused and inappropriate for a commander-in-chief.
Rather than uplifting the next generation of military leaders, Crockett said, the former president veered into unrelated topics — including his legal troubles and personal life — which she believes raise serious concerns.
“I don’t think those that have gone through West Point expected to have their ‘commander-in-chief’ address them and start talking about trophy wives or how he has so many investigations,” Crockett said. “That is not instilling confidence whatsoever. Our troops deserve better. Our graduates deserve better. We, as a country, deserve better.”
Crockett, one of Trump’s most vocal critics in Congress, argued that if Republicans are questioning President Joe Biden’s cognitive abilities, they should apply the same scrutiny to Trump, especially as he campaigns for another term in office.
“If we are ever going to be seen as world leaders, it’s time for Republicans to start calling him out and start questioning his mental acuity,” she added.
Trump’s speech reportedly left many in the crowd perplexed. Instead of focusing on leadership, unity, or national service, the former president delved into a mix of grievances and controversial policy positions, including military spending priorities, foreign policy disputes, and his administration’s stance on transgender service members.
He also referred to the graduates as part of the “golden age” of the U.S. military.
Crockett likened Trump’s delivery to a “stream-of-consciousness rant,” telling Fox News, “Like he’d just be all over the place. Get him some ADHD medicine, if nothing else, because I don’t know where he’s ever gonna go.”
Adding to the controversy, Trump reportedly left the ceremony early and skipped the traditional handshake with graduating cadets, sparking criticism online. Social media users alleged that he left for a golf outing — a claim that has yet to be confirmed by his team.
Crockett’s remarks come on the heels of Republican calls for an investigation into President Biden’s capacity to serve, following his recent prostate cancer diagnosis. She argued that if Biden’s health is a subject of concern, then Trump’s behavior and coherence should be examined with equal urgency.
The Texas lawmaker also took aim at House Republicans for passing what she called a “cruel” spending bill just ahead of the Memorial Day weekend. According to Crockett, the legislation prioritizes tax benefits for the wealthy at the expense of everyday Americans.
“It guarantees top earners being able to have their next trophy wife or buy their next yacht or get their next plane,” she said, while low- and middle-income Americans are left behind.
