Oakland to Host Black Music Month Festival on June 28

Oakland is getting ready to host its Fourth Annual Black Music Month Festival on Saturday, June 28 at Geoffrey’s Inner Circle. This event has become a key part of the city’s celebration of Black music and culture, bringing people of all ages together.

Organized by the School of the Getdown and A Train Productions, the black music month festival will feature a mix of well-known and rising artists. The headline act is Miss Faye Carol, a local music legend, who will perform with her band.

She’ll be joined by other talented musicians including Lady Bianca, Derick Hughes, Eddie M., Juan Escovedo, and young singers from the School of the Getdown.

Honoring Bay Area Legends

A highlight of the evening will be the premiere of “Black Artists of the Bay: Icons & Unsung,” a tribute production that celebrates Bay Area artists who have influenced the sound and spirit of Black music locally and nationally.

The program includes live tributes to icons like The Pointer Sisters and Sly & the Family Stone, while also honoring musicians whose contributions have often gone unrecognized.

“Honoring both the legends and the unsung is what makes this festival special,” says Traci Bartlow, the event’s host. “It’s a living history lesson that brings our community together.”

More than a concert, the festival is designed as a full community experience. Attendees can enjoy soul food, a full bar, and the welcoming atmosphere that Geoffrey’s Inner Circle is known for.

Importantly, admission is free for anyone under 18 with advance reservation, while general admission tickets are $45.

The organizers have made it clear: this festival is for everyone. Whether you are a lifelong jazz aficionado or just discovering the rich tapestry of Black music, the event promises something for all ages.

Why This Festival Matters

Black Music Month, first celebrated in 1979, is a time to recognize the huge impact Black musicians have had on all kinds of music. This Oakland festival helps keep that tradition alive, connecting the past with the future and bringing the community together.
