Angela Bassett to Address Spelman College’s Class of 2024

Spelman College has announced that Angela Bassett, the esteemed Emmy award-winning actress, director, and executive producer, will be the keynote speaker for its 137th Commencement Ceremony.
Bassett, celebrated for her roles in films such as “Malcolm X,” “How Stella Got Her Groove Back,” “Black Panther,” and “Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” will also receive an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree during the ceremony.
Bassett’s commendation extends beyond her notable screen performances to her impactful presence in the industry.
Her portrayal of Tina Turner in the 1993 film “What’s Love Got to Do with It” earned her an Oscar nomination and established her as an influential figure in cinema.
Spelman College President Dr. Helene D. Gayle expressed her enthusiasm about Bassett’s involvement, stating, “Spelman College is honored to have acclaimed actress and director Angela Bassett to inspire our graduating Class of 2024.
Her significant contributions both on and off the screen set an example for our students to follow as they venture into their own futures.”
In addition to Bassett’s anticipated commencement speech, she will join other notable honorees at the ceremony.
Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree, while Atlanta journalist Rose Scott will be presented with the National Community Service Award.
The commencement will be held on Sunday, May 19, 2024, at the Georgia International Convention Center (GICC). The event will be preceded by a Baccalaureate Ceremony on Saturday, May 18, featuring a speech by social justice minister Reverend Dr. Yvette Flunder.
Spelman’s Class of 2024 consists of 504 degree candidates, with 325 students earning Bachelor of Arts degrees and 179 earning Bachelor of Science degrees.
