Stephen Curry Launches Full Scholarship Program for Bay Area Students at Davidson College

When Stephen Curry arrived at Davidson College as a lightly recruited teenager in 2006, few believed he would become one of basketball’s key figures. Two decades later, the four-time NBA champion is using that same college to create opportunities for a new generation of students from underserved communities in California’s Bay Area.

Curry, along with Davidson College, College Track, and the Oakland Unified School District, has launched the Davidson College Curry Scholars Program. This full scholarship initiative is meant to support high-achieving students from underserved Bay Area communities starting in 2027.

Accordng to reports, the program will offer much more than just tuition support. According to Davidson College, selected students will receive a financial package that includes housing, meals, books, fees, a computer allowance, and an all-expenses-paid visit to campus during the admissions process.

For Curry, this initiative reflects a personal mission linked to his own experience at Davidson, where he became a national basketball star before emerging as one of the NBA’s most influential athletes.

“Davidson changed my life,” Curry said in a statement released by the college. “It’s where I figured out who I was, not just as a basketball player, but as a person.”

He added that creating opportunities for Bay Area students “means everything” to him because of the life-changing power of higher education and mentorship.

The scholarship initiative also supports Davidson’s larger goal of expanding access for first-generation and low-income students. The college noted that more than 22% of its current first-year students are eligible for Pell Grants, showing ongoing efforts to diversify access to top liberal arts education.

The announcement has attracted significant media attention in the U.S., especially due to Curry’s strong connections to both Davidson and the Bay Area through his career with the Golden State Warriors. This initiative links those two worlds, blending educational opportunity with community impact.

Founded in 1837, Davidson College has earned a reputation as one of America’s top liberal arts schools, focusing on academic excellence and leadership development. Curry completed his sociology degree at Davidson in 2022, years after leaving for the NBA Draft. He also became the first athlete in school history to have his jersey number retired.
