<p class="wp-block-paragraph">She put out &#8220;Witch Doctor&#8221; in July and honestly, it felt like a rumor. That&#8217;s just how <a href="https://www.erykahbadu.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Erykah Badu</a> moves. No press releases, no rollout plans. She teases, disappears, pops back up with a phone number you have to unlock through some scavenger hunt she buried on YouTube. So when <em>Before the World Blows: The Abi &amp; Alan Experiment</em> actually landed August 28, half the internet reacted like they&#8217;d just watched a UFO landing get confirmed on live TV.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The numbers back it up as searches for her name went nuclear this week. And it&#8217;s not just the new album people are checking for. &#8220;Didn&#8217;t Cha Know?&#8221; and &#8220;Window Seat&#8221; are both trending like they dropped yesterday, not twenty-odd years ago. Even her tour announcement from June is suddenly getting fresh traction. For someone who&#8217;s spent her whole career moving at her own weird pace, Badu is everywhere right now.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>16 Years is a Long Damn Time</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Before the World Blows</em> is her first studio album since <em>New Amerykah Part Two</em> in 2010. Think about that. There are college kids right now who were born after her last album came out. They grew up on her old records without ever getting a new one to call their own.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The album started because Badu heard the instrumental for <a href="https://www.mobbdeep.net/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mobb Deep</a>&#8216;s &#8220;The Realest&#8221; and thought, &#8220;I wanna rap over this.&#8221; That one session with <a href="https://www.instagram.com/alchemist/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Alchemist</a> turned into a 16-track project recorded over about 18 months between Dallas and LA.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Features are stacked. <a href="https://www.stevelacy.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Steve Lacy</a>, <a href="https://thundercatmusic.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Thundercat</a>, <a href="https://earlsweatshirt.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Earl Sweatshirt</a>, <a href="https://www.kamasiwashington.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kamasi Washington</a>, <a href="https://www.westsidegunn.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Westside Gunn</a>, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/bigbabyandred/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">DRAM</a>. Joi. DJ Creole Princess. <a href="https://www.instagram.com/youngguru/?hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Young Guru</a> on mixing.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The title came from somewhere less glamorous. Badu told <a href="https://music.apple.com/us/artist/zane-lowe/1122039350" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Zane Lowe</a> she was just doomscrolling like the rest of us, watching the world fall apart, and thought —</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I&#8217;m thinking, &#8216;Damn, this shit gonna blow up at some point. Maybe we need to finish this album before the world blows.&#8217; &#8211; Erykah Badu</p>
</blockquote>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Alchemist put it more bluntly. He told <a href="https://www.billboard.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Billboard</a> the whole thing reminded him of old East Coast mixtapes — &#8220;some Ron G mixtape shit.&#8221; Still can&#8217;t quite believe he got Erykah Badu on a project like this.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">She told <a href="https://music.apple.com/us/artist/erykah-badu/3454002" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Apple Music</a> they just speak the same language. &#8220;The way he samples makes me want to make music with him that he would want to sample.&#8221;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>She&#8217;s Touring this Fall and Tickets are a Bloodbath</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The <em>LIVE: A September Tour</em> kicks off September 10 at <a href="https://www.ravinia.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ravinia Festival</a> outside Chicago and wraps September 29 at the <a href="https://www.hollywoodbowl.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hollywood Bowl</a> in Los Angeles. Thirteen dates. Detroit, Toronto, Cleveland, New York, Denver, California stops. <a href="https://www.instagram.com/alchemist/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Alchemist</a> on the whole run. <a href="https://www.instagram.com/wearedelasoul/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">De La Soul</a> opening the first leg. <a href="https://www.instagram.com/smino/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Smino</a> jumping in for San Diego and Berkeley.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">People are treating this less like a tour and more like a victory lap for an album that took forever to materialize. Tickets have been flying since June. That Hollywood Bowl finale is already looking like the one show everyone&#8217;s gonna be pissed they missed.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before all this new shit, Badu already had the foundation locked. &#8220;Didn&#8217;t Cha Know?&#8221; came off <em>Mama&#8217;s Gun</em> in 2000. Produced by <a href="https://www.jdilla.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">J Dilla</a>. Built around a warped sample of Tarika Blue&#8217;s &#8220;Dreamflower.&#8221; It&#8217;s a song about being lost and moving anyway. That&#8217;s why it won&#8217;t die. Every few years, a new wave of listeners finds it at the exact moment they need to hear someone say, &#8220;I don&#8217;t know where I&#8217;m going either, but I&#8217;m still here.&#8221;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="678" height="452" src="https://blackelites.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/image-23.png" alt="" class="wp-image-21614" srcset="https://blackelites.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/image-23.png 678w, https://blackelites.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/image-23-300x200.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 678px) 100vw, 678px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Source: Vogue</figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>&#8220;Window Seat&#8221; — Yeah, We All Still Remember the Video</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;Window Seat&#8221; is the other one blowing up. Search traffic for its lyrics spiked right alongside the album and tour news. Not going to paste the lyrics here — you can find those on <a href="https://genius.com/artists/Erykah-badu" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Genius</a> or her official pages. What made that song stick wasn&#8217;t just the track. It was the video. She shot it guerrilla-style in Dealey Plaza in Dallas. Stripped down in public as a statement about conformity. Got more headlines than most of her actual singles ever did. People are still talking about it fifteen years later.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s easy to call this a comeback. But that misses the point. Badu never stopped working. She toured. She dropped a 25th anniversary reissue of <em>Mama&#8217;s Gun</em> earlier this year. She popped up on other people&#8217;s records. She just wasn&#8217;t in a rush to put out another solo album.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The wait was real. The absence wasn&#8217;t. She&#8217;s always been on her own clock.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What&#8217;s happening now doesn&#8217;t feel like an artist returning. It feels like everyone else finally caught up.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Questions People keep Asking about Erykah Badu</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>When does the tour start and end?</strong><br>September 10 at <a href="https://www.ravinia.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ravinia Festival</a> near Chicago. September 29 at the <a href="https://www.hollywoodbowl.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hollywood Bowl</a> in LA. <a href="https://www.instagram.com/alchemist/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Alchemist</a>, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/wearedelasoul/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">De La Soul</a>, and <a href="https://www.instagram.com/smino/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Smino</a> on select dates.WQ</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>What is <em>Before the World Blows</em>?</strong><br>Her first studio album since 2010. Produced with <a href="https://www.instagram.com/alchemist/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Alchemist</a>. Features <a href="https://www.stevelacy.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Steve Lacy</a>, <a href="https://thundercatmusic.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Thundercat</a>, <a href="https://earlsweatshirt.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Earl Sweatshirt</a>, <a href="https://www.kamasiwashington.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kamasi Washington</a>, and more. Dropped digitally August 28, 2026 via Control FREAQ Records / Young Recordings.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Where can I find &#8220;Window Seat&#8221; lyrics?</strong><br><a href="https://genius.com/artists/Erykah-badu" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Genius</a> or her official channels. The song&#8217;s from 2010&#8217;s <em>New Amerykah Part Two</em>. It&#8217;s about wanting to be left alone.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Who produced &#8220;Didn&#8217;t Cha Know?&#8221;</strong><br><a href="https://www.jdilla.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">J Dilla</a>. Off <em>Mama&#8217;s Gun</em> (2000). Samples Tarika Blue&#8217;s &#8220;Dreamflower.&#8221; About feeling lost but pushing through anyway.</p>
