In an extraordinary comeback that has gained worldwide attention, Michael Jackson’s music has reached new streaming highs following the hit biopic Michael, almost two decades after the “King of Pop” passed away. This trend shows the lasting cultural influence of Jackson’s catalogue. It also reflects how films continue to change how we listen to music in 2026.

According to industry data from Kworb, Jackson has become the #1 artist on the Global Digital Artist Ranking for May 2026. He has surpassed modern chart stars like Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, and Bad Bunny. Kworb’s monthly list shows Jackson leading the global streaming charts with 11,157 ranking points. This is nearly 5,000 ahead of the next artist. This is a strong indication of the late icon’s renewed popularity in the digital era.

On major platforms, streaming has increased remarkably. In the United States, Jackson’s solo catalogue garnered 137.5 million on-demand streams in the week after the film’s theatrical release. This includes timeless classics like Thriller and Billie Jean, as well as lesser-known tracks rediscovered by new audiences. It marks a 146% rise compared to the week prior, according to Billboard data.

Industry leaders see a clear connection between cinematic storytelling and digital listening. “We’re witnessing a rare cultural moment where the emotional impact of a biographical film drives listeners back to the source.” Maria Reynolds, a senior analyst at Music Data Insights, says: “It’s defining the narrative of global music consumption in 2026.”

This idea was reinforced at the Uber Eats Music Hall in Berlin, where the film Michael premiered in April. Thousands of fans gathered to celebrate Jackson’s life and legacy. Antoine Fuqua directed the biopic. It features Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson. It opened strongly at the box office, earning an estimated $97 million during its debut weekend in the U.S. and over $217 million internationally. These numbers rank it among the highest-grossing music biopics ever.

“Bringing my uncle’s story to the big screen was about honouring a legacy.” Jaafar Jackson told reporters at the film’s Los Angeles premiere. He highlighted the emotional and artistic bond that audiences around the world have rediscovered.

The streaming revival also includes The Jackson 5 and The Jacksons. These have seen significant increases, with their collective catalogues experiencing double-digit percentage rises in plays across platforms.

As Michael continues its global theatrical rollout and audiences look forward to the film’s streaming releases, Jackson’s climb on the charts marks a significant moment. It reflects the lasting impact of a cultural icon whose work continues to shape the music landscape of the 21st century.

Wade Robson and James Safechuck are seeking $400 million in damages from Michael Jackson’s estate, according to court filings that surfaced amid a separate dispute between Paris Jackson and estate executors over mounting legal costs.

Robson and Safechuck, who sued the estate in early 2025, had not publicly disclosed a damages figure until the sum emerged in papers tied to Paris Jackson’s objections. She has challenged what she characterizes as exorbitant legal expenditures, noting the estate has retained multiple law firms to manage different facets of the case.

Estate co-executors John Branca and John McClain argue the spending is necessary to defend against the suit and avoid a potential default judgment for the full $400 million. In recent filings, they warned that restricting payments could undermine the estate’s ability to meet deadlines for depositions, discovery, and motions scheduled over the coming months.

“The Estate would likely have to default … where numerous depositions, discovery matters, and other matters are scheduled to take place,” the executors wrote, calling the funds essential to protect Jackson’s assets and business operations.

The court’s decision on Paris Jackson’s objection could shape how aggressively the estate is able to litigate—and by extension, the financial health of Jackson’s legacy.

Robson first sued in 2013, alleging sexual abuse beginning when he was seven; Safechuck filed a similar suit in 2014, alleging abuse starting at age ten. Their accounts drew widespread attention following the 2019 documentary Leaving Neverland, which the estate has forcefully disputed. Jackson, who died in 2009, denied misconduct during his lifetime, and the estate continues to reject all allegations.

A hearing on the spending dispute is expected to clarify how the estate will fund its defense as the high-stakes case proceeds.

Michael Jackson’s estate has filed a lawsuit against Frank Cascio, a former friend and business associate of the late pop icon, accusing him of extortion in Los Angeles Superior Court.

According to court documents, Michael Jackson’s estate claims that Cascio demanded up to $213 million and threatened to go public with false abuse allegations against Jackson if he was not paid.

The suit alleges that Cascio and his associates met with estate representatives at the Sunset Marquis Hotel in Los Angeles, specifically choosing the pool area to avoid surveillance and recording devices, where they issued their threats.

“The negotiation with Respondents morphed into a shakedown,” the petition states, describing how Cascio and his team threatened to fabricate damaging claims about Jackson, despite years of previously defending him.

The estate’s lawyers argue that since Jackson is deceased, there are no legal protections against defamation of his character, making the threats even more damaging.

Cascio, once a public supporter of Michael Jackson, withdrew his support following the 2011 HBO documentary “Leaving Neverland.” He reportedly received a $3.3 million settlement at the time, which included confidentiality clauses designed to protect Jackson’s children and estate.

The estate contends that by now threatening to go public, Cascio is violating the terms of that agreement, which required any future disputes to be handled through arbitration.

“This is a clear case of civil extortion,” estate attorney Martin D. Singer told The Blast. “We will not stand by as Michael Jackson’s legacy is threatened by falsehoods and financial schemes.”

The suit further claims that Cascio’s legal team, led by attorney Mark Geragos, continued to demand large sums—lowering their request from $213 million to $44 million—and threatened to make damaging allegations public if not paid.

The estate, now valued at more than $3 billion, is seeking to compel Cascio to resolve the dispute through arbitration as agreed.

“Mr. Cascio was part of Michael’s life for over 30 years, publicly defending him and calling himself family,” a spokesperson for the estate said. “Now, years after Michael’s death, he is seeking to profit from claims he once rejected as false.”

If the court sides with Jackson’s estate, Cascio would be required to move the dispute out of the public eye and into private arbitration, as per his original settlement agreement.

On June 25, 2009, the world was stunned by news that felt too heavy to believe: Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, was dead at just 50.

Sixteen years later, the pain of that loss still lingers, but so does the power of his music, a soundtrack for generations and a driving force in the celebration of Black artistry around the globe.

Michael Jackson wasn’t just a pop star; he was a cultural phenomenon. From his early days with the Jackson 5 to his groundbreaking solo career, he redefined music videos, broke racial barriers on MTV, and set records with hits like “Thriller,” “Billie Jean,” and “Black or White.”

But behind the glittering stage lights, Jackson’s personal life was filled with pain and struggle.

Enduring Abuse From Childhood to Adulthood

Long before the adulation and applause, Michael’s childhood was marked by hardship and trauma. His father, Joe Jackson, managed the Jackson 5 with a heavy and unforgiving hand. Michael and his brothers were subjected to strict discipline, but Michael, as the youngest and the standout talent, often bore the brunt of Joe’s frustration.

In interviews, Michael spoke openly about the “fear” he felt towards his father, how rehearsals would sometimes end in physical punishments and harsh words. “He was very strict, very hard, very stern,” Michael told Oprah Winfrey in 1993.

“He would just get this look in his eye…It was like scolding, like scariness.” The emotional wounds were so deep that even as an adult, Michael admitted to sometimes becoming physically ill at the thought of facing his father.

This early trauma fueled his perfectionism and ambition, but also left scars of loneliness, insecurity, and a lifelong struggle for acceptance. Michael’s yearning for a lost childhood could be seen in the very design of his Neverland Ranch—a place he described as a sanctuary for the childhood he never truly had.

But the suffering didn’t end there. As an adult, Michael Jackson was the target of intense public scrutiny, false rumors, and legal battles. In a heartbreaking interview following his 2003 arrest by Santa Barbara County authorities, Jackson described the dehumanizing treatment he suffered while in police custody.

He claimed he was handcuffed, locked in a bathroom, left bleeding, and forced to submit to invasive procedures. “It was the most humiliating thing I’ve ever experienced in my life,” Jackson said, fighting back tears as he recounted the ordeal on national television.

Jackson also suffered from vitiligo, a skin condition that dramatically altered his appearance. Misunderstood by many, this condition led to years of speculation and criticism in the media, adding to his emotional burden.

Accusations and the Weight of Fame

Throughout his career, Jackson faced multiple accusations of child sexual abuse. Ten young boys accused him over the years. Jackson always maintained his innocence and was acquitted in court, but the allegations, and the global media circus they created—cast a long shadow over his legacy.

Financial Struggles Despite Record Sales

Despite selling over 70 million albums and becoming one of the highest-selling artists in history, Jackson faced financial problems in his later years. Lavish spending, legal costs, and mounting debts forced him to plan the “This Is It” tour as a financial comeback, but he passed away before the tour began.

Why We Can’t Celebrate Black Music Without Michael Jackson

Despite the pain, controversy, and immense pressure, Michael Jackson’s creative genius changed the face of music forever. His innovations in sound, dance, and visual storytelling remain unmatched, and his influence is felt across every genre.

To celebrate Black music and not mention Michael Jackson is to ignore a giant whose legacy still inspires millions. Sixteen years after his passing, the world remembers not just the artist, but also the human being who endured so much to bring joy to others.
