The footage is part of a longer clip promoting false 2020 election conspiracy theories. It appears at the end of a roughly one-minute video and lasts only a moment, but its impact has been significant.

The clip’s inclusion of the Obamas, the first Black president and first lady in U.S. history, drew quick condemnation from across the political spectrum.

California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office called the imagery “disgusting behavior,” urging Republicans to speak out against it. Former Obama national security aide Ben Rhodes described the post as a “stain on history.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the post, dismissing criticisms as “fake outrage.” She labeled the video an internet meme that shows Trump as “King of the Jungle” and Democrats as characters from The Lion King.

She urged the media to focus on “something that actually matters to the American public.”

The video recirculates long-standing false claims about ballot-counting machines switching votes in key states during the 2020 election. It also attracted attention due to Trump’s history of provocative online posts and previous use of AI-generated political content.

Sharing such imagery adds to a deeply offensive narrative, especially when racial tensions remain a major concern in American politics.

Though Trump did not directly address the backlash, the incident has reopened discussions about racism, political discourse, and the responsibilities of public figures in digital communications.

Whether or not the video was fully viewed before posting, its political and cultural repercussions continue to unfold.

During a scene where the basketball stars are celebrating their Olympic victory, Obama, a known basketball enthusiast, makes his way through the group, greeting players. When he reaches Anthony Edwards, the young guard doesn’t hesitate to express his self-confidence, even in front of the former president.

Obama, engaging in the moment, talks to Joel Embiid about Edwards’ skills on the court. Embiid compliments Edwards, but in a playful twist, Edwards interjects to elevate himself, stating boldly, “Nah, y’all better stand down. I’m the truth.”

This exchange catches the attention of other NBA stars like LeBron James and Kevin Durant, who soon join the conversation. James teases Edwards about his claim, echoing, “The truth? The whole truth and nothing but the truth?”

This prompts Edwards to explain the context of his statement, emphasizing that he was reacting to what he felt was an understatement of his abilities by Embiid.

The playful banter continues with Obama and the NBA stars, highlighting Anthony fearless personality and how he holds his own among basketball’s elite. This moment, while lighthearted, underscores the camaraderie and mutual respect among the team members, as well as Edwards’ readiness to assert his place in the sport.

The series “Court of Gold” not only showcases the athletic achievements of the USA Basketball team but also offers a glimpse into the interactions and relationships that form between the players off the court.

Through episodes like this, viewers can appreciate the blend of talent and personality that defines the team, making their Olympic journey about more than just sports.

Obama’s remarks, which occurred on October 19, have drawn both support and criticism, particularly from some in the Black community.

What Did Obama Say?

While visiting Harris’ campaign office ahead of a scheduled rally in the city, Obama took a moment to deliver a message specifically aimed at men. The crowd, reportedly made up of Black Harris supporters, listened as Obama challenged the idea that some men might not support the idea of a woman president.

“Part of it makes me think, and I’m speaking to men directly, that, well, you just aren’t feeling the idea of having a woman as president,” Obama said, according to Newsweek.

He continued, “Now you’re thinking about sitting out or even supporting somebody who has a history of degrading you? Because you think that’s a sign of strength? Because that’s what being a man is, putting women down? That’s not acceptable.”

Backlash from Critics

Obama’s remarks quickly sparked criticism from some quarters. Former Ohio State Senator Nina Turner was one of the most vocal critics, calling out the former president for singling out Black men.

“Why are Black men being belittled in ways that no other voting group [is]?” Turner asked during an appearance on CNN NewsNight with Abby Phillip. She went on to say that while she had respect for Obama, “for him to single out Black men is wrong.”

Social media reactions followed suit, with many users expressing frustration. According to Newsweek, social monitoring firm Impact Social found that Obama’s comments generated “significantly negative” reactions, with some feeling the remarks were “disrespectful and patronizing to Black voters.”

Obama’s Team Clears the Air

In response to the backlash, Obama’s team reached out to The Shade Room’s Justin Carter to offer clarification on the former president’s intent. Speaking on CNN News Central, Carter shared that Obama’s message was not meant to criticize Black men for their voting choices or pressure them into supporting Harris.

“The sentiment was not to put Black men against the wall and make them feel bad if they choose not to vote for the vice president,” Carter explained. “Really, the message was: ‘Let’s think about this, let’s think about supporting a Black woman for president,’ and not necessarily targeting the Black male demographic.”

Carter also appeared on ABC News to further explain that Obama’s intention was not to “belittle” Black male voters but to encourage them to recognize Harris as a strong presidential candidate. “The intent was just to go out there and show them that she’s a strong candidate,” he reiterated.

The Debate Continues

Obama’s comments have sparked a larger conversation about gender, race, and politics in America. As the 2024 presidential race heats up, how his remarks and the ensuing debate impact voter turnout among Black men remains to be seen.

However, the former president’s team is making it clear that his focus was on urging voters to support Harris based on her qualifications, not on dividing the Black community.

Obama criticized Silicon Valley CEOs, including Bezos, accusing them of prioritizing space exploration over addressing pressing environmental concerns.

“When I hear some of the people talk about the plan to colonize Mars because the Earth’s environment may become so degraded that it becomes unlivable, I look at them like, what are you talking about?”

While Elon Musk, the innovator behind Tesla, kickstarted SpaceX with a $100 million personal investment, Bezos reportedly poured between $7.5 billion and $20 billion into his aerospace venture, Blue Origin.

Obama Critique at 2024 Earth Summit

Obama argued that such vast sums would be better utilised to address urgent environmental challenges on our home planet.

Expressing disbelief at the notion of abandoning Earth due to environmental degradation, Obama emphasized the need to confront severe ecological issues threatening life as we know it, particularly climate change.

Citing a report from the Associated Press, he highlighted the UN weather agency’s declaration of a “red alert” for global warming, citing alarming increases in greenhouse gas emissions, land and water temperatures, and the rapid melting of glaciers and sea ice in 2023.

Despite global efforts to reverse these trends, the agency warned that current actions are insufficient.

In contrast, Bezos contends that space exploration offers the best chance to safeguard humanity’s future by preserving Earth’s natural resources.

Speaking on the Lex Fridman podcast, the billionaire pointed to societal progress in literacy, poverty reduction, and declining infant mortality rates as evidence of humanity’s advancement, but acknowledged the toll it has taken on the environment.

He argued that while society enjoys the benefits of progress, the natural world is regressing, necessitating a bold leap into space to achieve a balance between advancement and environmental preservation.

Blue Origin aims to launch its New Glenn mega-rocket on its maiden voyage by the third quarter of 2024.

The company’s objective is to enable humans to choose between living on Earth or inhabiting large space stations nearby, with the potential to tap into resources from the asteroid belt and near-Earth objects to fuel human expansion.

Bezos envisions a future where space tourism becomes commonplace, likening it to visiting Yellowstone National Park for vacation.

His ultimate vision? A solar system bustling with a trillion inhabitants, fostering an environment conducive to nurturing countless geniuses akin to Mozart and Einstein.
