Shannon Sharpe, former NFL star and co-host of ESPN’s First Take, has reportedly been let go from the network just weeks after settling a high-profile sexual assault lawsuit.

The development, first reported by The Atlantic on Wednesday, 30 July, has stirred fresh debate online as the timing coincides with his accuser’s sudden announcement of retirement from adult content platform, OnlyFans.

Sharpe had been a regular face on ESPN programming until April, when allegations of sexual assault and unlawful video recording were filed against him by Gabriella Zuniga, an ex-girlfriend and social media personality.

Zuniga sought $50 million in damages, claiming the former tight end raped her and filmed her without consent. The case was settled on Friday for undisclosed terms.

Though details of the settlement remain private, Zuniga has since deleted her original claims from social media and announced, in a now-deleted post, her departure from OnlyFans.

“I’ve decided to retire,” she wrote. “Thank you for the incredible support you’ve shown me over the past few years. This community has given me a life I could have never imagined.”

She added that she plans to remain active on social media and teased new projects.

The timing of her retirement, coming just hours after the lawsuit was settled, has fuelled widespread speculation online. On TikTok, influencer @TheKempire quipped, “The timeliness of this retirement is not lost on me,” as users across platforms questioned whether Zuniga’s departure signified a financial windfall.

Another creator, @Po.lette, remarked: “Lady taken care of and is set for life,” while also critiquing male public figures for “inability to control their urges.”

Social media reactions have been mixed. Some applauded Zuniga’s perceived victory, with comments like “checkmate” and “retired herself on his dime.” Others viewed it with suspicion or frustration. On X (formerly Twitter), @Stevozone4_ wrote, “I’ve never seen a retirement announcement immediately after a settlement before,” suggesting the optics were jarring.

Lawyer Tony Buzbee, who represented Zuniga, confirmed in a statement on Friday that “both sides acknowledge a long-term consensual and tumultuous relationship,” adding that the matter has been “resolved satisfactorily.”

Sharpe, who gained a cult following for his sharp commentary and viral podcast Club Shay Shay, has not commented publicly on his exit from ESPN. The network has also yet to release an official statement regarding his departure.

NFL Hall of Famer and sports commentator Shannon Sharpe has yet to formally respond to a civil lawsuit accusing him of sexual assault, with a court hearing now set for July 9 in Clark County, Nevada.

According to NBC Sports, court records indicate that attorneys on both sides have filed several motions, and a hearing is scheduled to address three separate motions to associate counsel at 10:00 a.m. local time. The hearing was previously scheduled for June 30.

The $50 million lawsuit, filed by a woman who alleges Sharpe assaulted, battered, and manipulated her during their relationship, is moving forward after Sharpe missed the typical 30-day window to respond. While Sharpe publicly declared the relationship was “100% consensual” and initially threatened to countersue, he has not yet submitted an official response in court.

Sharpe made a public statement in April, sharing a screenshot of a text message and confirming he’d temporarily stepped away from his ESPN duties amid the allegations. He also claimed he had previously offered the plaintiff $10 million to settle before the case became public.

Further complicating matters, the plaintiff’s attorney, Tony Buzbee, released an audio recording in which a male voice alleged to be Sharpe can be heard threatening violence in a sexual context.

Sharpe’s attorney, Lanny Davis, described the relationship as consensual and involving “role-playing, sexual language and fantasy scenarios,” asserting that Sharpe’s words were not meant literally.

Sharpe has stated plans to return to ESPN ahead of the NFL preseason, but with the Hall of Fame Game set for July 31 and court proceedings now underway, it remains uncertain if he’ll be back on air by then.

NFL Hall of Famer and ESPN personality Shannon Sharpe has announced a temporary leave of absence from his duties at the network following the emergence of serious sexual assault allegations against him.

Sharpe, who co-hosts First Take, shared the news on Thursday, April 24, via Instagram. In a screenshot of a text message posted to his feed, he said the decision was made to focus on addressing the legal battle and spending time with his family.

“The relationship in question was 100% consensual,” Sharpe wrote. “At this juncture I am electing to step aside temporarily from my ESPN duties.”

He added that he plans to return to the network at the start of the NFL preseason, emphasizing his intent to face the matter directly.

“I will be devoting this time to my family and responding to these false and disruptive allegations,” the statement continued. “I sincerely appreciate the overwhelming and ongoing support I have received from my family, fans, friends, and colleagues.”

Allegations and Lawsuit

Sharpe’s leave comes just days after a 13-page civil complaint was filed in Nevada state court on April 20, 2025, accusing him of sexual assault, battery, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

The plaintiff, identified as Jane Doe, claims she and Sharpe had a two-year on-and-off consensual relationship. However, she alleges that the relationship turned abusive — including claims that he raped her, physically assaulted her, and threatened her life. According to court filings, the alleged incidents began when she tried to share her location with friends, prompting threatening behavior from Sharpe.

Sharpe and his legal team have strongly denied the allegations, labeling them as a calculated extortion attempt. The former Denver Broncos star revealed that the plaintiff is demanding $50 million, and his team has since released sexually explicit text messages purportedly exchanged between the two in an effort to provide context.

Legal and Public Response

Sharpe has also accused the plaintiff’s attorney, Tony Buzbee, of targeting high-profile Black men — noting Buzbee’s involvement in recent lawsuits against celebrities like JAY-Z and Diddy.

Public reaction has been mixed. While many expressed disappointment, Sharpe’s supporters have shown solidarity in his comments section, applauding his decision to step back and face the issue.

“Thank God Unc owns his podcast shows, and can continue working while all this is going on,” one user commented. Another added, “May this be a teachable moment for all — know who you let into your life.”

What’s Next?

As the legal process unfolds, all eyes will remain on both the courtroom and the court of public opinion. For now, Shannon Sharpe has stepped away from ESPN but continues to operate his personal media platforms, including the Club Shay Shay podcast.

No criminal charges have been filed as of the time of reporting.

Pro Football Hall of Famer and media personality Shannon Sharpe is facing a serious legal battle as a woman identified as “Jane Doe” has filed a civil lawsuit accusing him of sexual assault, battery, and emotional abuse during what she describes as a “rocky, consensual relationship.”

Filed on Sunday, April 20, in a Nevada state court, the 13-page complaint alleges a pattern of coercive behavior and abuse over a two-year period. NBC Sports reports that the lawsuit seeks a minimum of $50 million in damages from Sharpe, a former NFL star and co-host of the popular Club Shay Shay podcast.

According to the complaint, the woman, who is more than 30 years younger than Sharpe, met him in 2023 at a gym in Los Angeles. She claims their relationship began with flirtation but evolved into a controlling and verbally abusive dynamic.

Despite the abuse, the plaintiff says she initially agreed to a consensual relationship but later attempted to distance herself after allegedly enduring emotional manipulation and threats.

“He demanded complete control over her time and body,” wrote her attorney, Tony Buzbee. The lawsuit further alleges that Sharpe insisted she come to his Beverly Glen home on command and attempted to isolate her from others.

One particularly disturbing incident cited in the lawsuit occurred in October 2024. The plaintiff claims that during a confrontation, Sharpe “forced himself on her while she was crying and sobbing.” In another instance, in January 2025, she says he allegedly assaulted her again after showing up at her residence under the pretense of delivering a birthday gift.

The complaint also accuses Sharpe of recording their sexual encounters without her consent and distributing the videos to third parties.

In one alarming passage, the lawsuit recounts an incident in which the woman attempted to share her location with friends out of fear for her safety — only for Sharpe to allegedly notice and threaten her life. “‘If you ever do that again, I will f***ing kill you,’” he reportedly told her.

The legal filing references Sharpe’s public mishap in September 2024, when he accidentally livestreamed a sexual encounter on Instagram. The woman in the video, the lawsuit clarifies, was not the plaintiff. The incident, however, is said to have been a turning point in the relationship and triggered the plaintiff’s efforts to cut ties.

“A woman can say ‘yes’ to consensual sexual relations with a man ninety-nine times,” the complaint states. “But when she says ‘no’ even once, that ‘no’ means no. Defendant Shannon Sharpe… refused to accept this basic concept.”

As of now, Sharpe has not publicly responded to the lawsuit. Legal proceedings are expected to unfold in the coming weeks.

This is a developing story.
