Tems did not need to change her sound to become a part of American popular music. Instead, a song she had written and produced years earlier became the emotional backbone of one of the biggest hip-hop records of the decade.

On July 16, 2026, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified Future’s “Wait for U,” featuring Drake and Tems, as 11-times Platinum after it surpassed 11 million certified units in the United States. This achievement made Tems the first African woman credited on an RIAA Diamond-certified single.

The milestone reflects how African music has evolved from being seen as a niche to becoming part of the commercial framework of the world’s largest music market.

It also highlights something significant about Tems’ rise. Her success was not based only on celebrity collaborations. It started with unique music that could cross genres, audiences, and markets while retaining its identity.

What Does Tems’ Diamond Certification Mean?

The RIAA awards Diamond status to a single that reaches at least 10 million certified units in the United States. These units can include eligible sales and streams under the organization’s certification rules. It is one of the highest commercial honors in the American recording industry.

“Wait for U” surpassed that threshold to reach 11-times Platinum.

Although “Wait for U” is officially a Future single featuring Drake and Tems, the milestone made her the first African woman credited on an RIAA Diamond-certified U.S. single.

This detail does not lessen the significance of her role. Tems’ voice provides the core melody that listeners hear throughout the track. The record samples her song “Higher,” which appeared on her 2020 EP, For Broken Ears.

Future’s team also gave her an official featured-artist credit instead of treating her contribution as an anonymous sample. This choice ensured that her name traveled with the song as it reached millions of listeners.

The Song That Started Before the Global Fame

Before “Wait for U,” Tems had already begun to build an audience around a sound that didn’t fit into one category.

Her voice combined elements of soul, alternative R&B, and African pop, while her production often left enough space for emotion to guide the music. She was not trying to imitate the faster, club-focused Afrobeats records that dominated many playlists at the time.

Her 2020 EP, For Broken Ears, established this approach. The project included “Higher,” a slow and emotional song about distance, uncertainty, and commitment. The record was not initially created as material for an American rap hit; it was part of Tems’ own artistic vision.

When “Higher” was sampled for “Wait for U,” its emotional depth gave Future and Drake a softer base for their verses. Tems’ voice shaped the identity of the entire song.

This is one reason the Diamond milestone matters. An independently developed song from a Nigerian artist became central to a major American record without losing the voice that made it unique.

“Essence” Opened the Door

Tems’ international growth had already gained momentum before “Wait for U.”

Her appearance on Wizkid’s “Essence” introduced her to a broader global audience in 2020 and 2021. The song became one of the most significant African crossover records of its time, later reaching No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 after a remix featuring Justin Bieber.

“Essence” showed that an African record could travel far without needing to be completely redesigned for American radio. It also positioned Tems as more than a supporting voice. For many listeners, her performance defined the song.

This success led to new collaborators, record executives, festivals, and audiences. However, Tems didn’t follow it up with a series of songs designed to replicate the same formula.

Instead, she continued to build a career focused on vocal identity, songwriting, and selective collaborations.

This decision helped protect her from being known for only one crossover hit.

“Wait for U” Changed the Scale of Her Career

Released as part of Future’s 2022 album, I Never Liked You, “Wait for U” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The record made Tems the first Nigerian artist to debut at the top of the chart. The song spent one week at No. 1 and later became a significant radio and streaming success.

Its impact went beyond its chart performance.

In 2023, “Wait for U” won the Grammy Award for Best Melodic Rap Performance. This gave Tems her first Grammy win and formally recognized her contribution alongside Future and Drake.

The Diamond certification came four years after the song’s release.

A No. 1 debut can reflect intense attention during a record’s first week. Diamond status requires something more lasting. It shows that the song continued to attract streams and sales long after its initial release campaign ended.

For Tems, the certification underscores the enduring commercial value of her contribution, not just temporary cultural visibility.

Why Tems’ Success Is Different

Tems’ rise reflects a broader change in how African artists can enter global markets.

For years, musicians from Africa often faced pressure to simplify their sound, change their accents, or rely on Western producers to gain international attention. Tems took a different approach.

Her original work provided the leverage.

“Higher” existed before Future and Drake sampled it. “Essence” became successful because of the chemistry between African artists, not because an American artist authored the song. Even as her global collaborations increased, Tems continued to release her own music and build a distinct identity.

This distinction is crucial for African artists aiming to create sustainable careers.

A major feature can create visibility, but visibility alone does not lead to long-term success. Artists gain stronger positions when they bring valuable songs, writing, production, or audiences into a collaboration.

Tems came into “Wait for U” with material valuable enough to influence the record. She was not just invited to sing a new chorus alongside two established stars.

From Featured Artist to Independent Global Star

After “Wait for U,” Tems continued to grow her career beyond collaborations.

She released her debut album, Born in the Wild, in 2024. The album allowed her to showcase a broader body of work under her own name and move beyond being known mainly as the voice behind “Essence” or “Wait for U.”

In 2025, she won her second Grammy Award when “Love Me JeJe” took Best African Music Performance. The Recording Academy currently lists her with two Grammy wins and eight nominations across global music, rap, and R&B categories.

This progression is strategically significant.

Tems first gained global recognition through a prominent African collaboration. She then reached the top of the American charts through a sampled song and international feature. After that, she strengthened her position through solo releases, her album, and another Grammy-winning record.

At each stage, she reduced her reliance on the success of previous achievements.

What the Milestone Means for African Women in Music

Tems’ Diamond certification does not mean African female artists are now competing on equal terms with their male counterparts.

Women in the African music industry still face limited access to funding, production support, management networks, and major performance opportunities. Tems herself has discussed these challenges and has created the Leading Vibe Initiative to support young African women in music.

However, commercial milestones can change how decision-makers assess risk.

When an African woman is credited on a song that generates over 10 million certified U.S. units, labels, publishers, and promoters gain concrete proof that African female talent can contribute to the highest levels of global music consumption.

The goal should not be for the industry to search for another artist who sounds exactly like Tems.

The broader lesson is that African women with unique sounds can enter international markets without becoming copies of existing American or European stars.

A Career Built on Ownership of Identity

Tems’ journey to Diamond status began long before “Wait for U” was recorded.

It started when she created a sound strong enough to thrive outside its original context. It gained momentum when “Essence” demonstrated that her voice could connect with global audiences. It accelerated when “Higher” became the basis of a No. 1 American single.

The Diamond certification is therefore not only a story about Future, Drake, or a successfu

In a recent interview on Kiss Fresh FM, South African singer Tyla lauded Tems for her significant role in paving the way for African female artists on the global stage.

Tyla, who gained international fame with her hit single ‘Water’ in 2023, expressed her admiration for Tems and gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with her1.

Tyla described Tems as an “amazing” singer and a “force” in the music industry.

“She has opened so many doors for us,” Tyla said, referring to the opportunities that have arisen for African female artists following Tems’ success.

The duo collaborated on a song that Tyla described as “beautiful” with a “beautiful message,” made by and for girls.

Tems graciously accepted the praise and expressed her belief that Tyla is also inspiring young South African girls and others around the world with her music.

“Man, it is an honour, I am very very, 100% sure that she’s inspiring many South African babe, many girls around the world as well”, she said.

Tyla’s single ‘Water’ entered the top 10 in sixteen countries, including the United Kingdom and the United States, and was the first song by a South African soloist to enter the US Billboard Hot 100 in 55 years.

In February, Tyla won her first Grammy Award in the ‘Best African Music Performance’ category for ‘Water ’.

Tems, on the other hand, won her first-ever Grammy award in 2023.

Her success has not only opened doors for African female artists but also set a new standard in the music industry.

Tems’ Journey to Global Recognition

Certainly! Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has had a remarkable journey to global recognition.

Born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, her life is a testament to her talent and determination.

Tems’ breakthrough came in 2020 when she featured on Wizkid’s song “Essence,” from his album “Made In Lagos”.

The song was a hit, catching the attention of fans both at home and abroad.

A remix version featuring Canadian pop artist Justin Bieber was released in 2021, and the song reached its highest peak at the ninth spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 list.

Since then, Tems has collaborated with international superstars, including Rihanna, Drake, Future, and Beyoncé.

Her unique voice and style have not only won her fans worldwide but also earned her a Grammy award in 2023.

Speaking at the Essence Festival in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the United States, on July 2, 2023, Tems described her life as a testimony.

“You know, my life is a testimony. I guess, for those who don’t understand, I’m from Lagos, Nigeria,” she said.

Tems’ journey from Lagos to the global spotlight is indeed a testimony to her talent, hard work, and the power of music to transcend borders and cultures.

Her success has opened doors for other African female artists and set a new standard in the music industry.
