These comments come amid strong backlash led by tech entrepreneur Elon Musk and some conservative media figures. They criticize Nyong’o’s casting as Helen of Troy, a character in classical mythology known for her beauty. Critics on social media argue that the role should align with historical or artistic expectations tied to traditional Western portrayals. This has sparked a broader discussion about representation in modern filmmaking.

On Instagram on May 15, Baldwin shared a photo of the Oscar-winning actress, directly responding to Musk’s criticism. According to reports, he wrote, “Dear Elon… but she IS the most beautiful woman in the world… Alec.” This post has become a key moment in the ongoing backlash, attracting attention from both entertainment and mainstream media outlets.

The controversy intensified after conservative commentator Matt Walsh posted on X (formerly Twitter). He stated that “not one person on the planet actually thinks that Lupita Nyong’o is ‘the most beautiful woman in the world.’” He suggested that director Christopher Nolan cast her to dodge accusations of racism. Musk responded simply, “True.”

Musk did not stop there. He posted multiple times, asserting that Nolan “lost his integrity” by making that casting choice. Despite the uproar, The Odyssey’s cast is one of the most discussed of 2026. It features Oscar winners and blockbuster stars like Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, and Tom Holland.

Nyong’o’s role is signals a new era where classic stories are reimagined for diverse global audiences. With early IMAX ticket sales reportedly strong and social media engagement at an all-time high, the film’s release could become a pivotal moment in discussions about representation and how beauty, storytelling, and mythology are reinterpreted today.
