Los Angeles County has been hit hard by wildfires this week. Over 2,000 homes, shops, and buildings have been destroyed, and sadly, five people have died because of the fires.
One of the worst areas affected is Altadena, where the Eaton fire spread very fast. It started on Tuesday night and moved quickly, helped by very strong winds. People living there had very little time to escape. They had to leave their homes quickly, taking very few things with them.
Maria Gonzalez, who lives in Altadena, shared her scary experience: “The sky was orange, and everything was smoky. You could hear the fire crackling. It felt like a bad dream,” she said. “We had to run and couldn’t take much. I just made sure my kids were with me.”
The fires have burned a large area, including the famous Pacific Coast Highway, and are threatening very expensive homes. Despite the hard work of over 2,500 firefighters, the fires are still not under control.
Many people had to leave their homes, and they are now staying in places set up to help them, like schools and community centers. These places give them food, clothes, and a safe place to stay.
At one of these centers, volunteers like Sarah Kim are helping out. “It’s very sad to see so many people losing their homes,” Sarah said. “But it’s also amazing to see how everyone is helping each other.”
The local fire chief, Anthony Marrone, praised the firefighters and the community. “Our firefighters are working very hard in tough conditions to save homes and lives,” he said. “We are thankful to the people who listened to us and left their homes, and to everyone helping their neighbors.”
The situation is still serious, and it might take a while to get better. But through all the loss, there are many stories of people being brave and helping each other. These stories give hope to the community as they face these tough times together.
