Black Entrepreneurs Launch Draft Ready to Prepare Student-Athletes for the New Sports Economy

A new leadership and career readiness program is emerging to ensure student-athletes are prepared for economic success beyond sports. On July 1, 2026, influential Black entrepreneurs Cimone Casson and Dr. Philip Hickman officially launched Draft Ready. This initiative is the first national program aimed at getting high school and college athletes ready for job opportunities in the evolving sports economy.

According to reports, Casson, Co-Founder and Chief Economic Opportunity Officer, stated at the launch, “Our mission isn’t just to develop better athletes. We’re building future executives, entrepreneurs, innovators, and community leaders. Every student-athlete deserves a plan that lasts longer than a season.”

This initiative appears at a crucial time when sports are moving beyond traditional limits. With Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals, digital commerce, athlete branding, and advancements in sports tech, the roles for athletes and the skills they need have expanded significantly. While NIL has created lucrative chances for athletes to make money, many student-athletes still need help understanding how to use these opportunities for long-term success. Draft Ready seeks to bridge that gap.

A New Vision for Athlete Development

Draft Ready shifts the focus of athlete development from just performance metrics to a broader, career-focused educational model. This model prioritizes leadership, financial knowledge, entrepreneurship, job readiness, and innovation. Casson and Hickman created this model to address a simple yet often ignored fact: only a small number of student-athletes go on to play professionally. However, all can thrive in careers related to sports, business, community leadership, and more.

Dr. Hickman, Co-Founder and Chief Innovation Officer, emphasized this vision: “Talent opens doors, but preparation creates opportunity. We want every student-athlete to understand how to translate discipline on the field into leadership in life.”

With the Detroit Public Schools Community District as its first partner, Draft Ready will initially implement its programs in Detroit, an urban center with a strong sports background and a growing education innovation landscape. The district’s Executive Director of Athletics, Jay Alexander, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership. He emphasized how Draft Ready connects educational leadership with athlete development in new ways.

Bridging the Gap: Learning Beyond the Game

Draft Ready’s curriculum is built around five main pillars:

  1. Career Readiness: Tools and preparation for jobs, internships, and professional paths.
  2. Financial Literacy & Wealth Building: Education on budgeting, investing, risk management, and personal finance.
  3. Entrepreneurship: Guidance on ideation, business development, digital monetization, and startup thinking.
  4. Workforce Development: Partnerships with employers and organizations to create real-world opportunities.
  5. Leadership & Innovation: Applying athletic discipline, strategy, and resilience in business and community settings.

Why It Matters: The Reality of the New Sports Economy

In 2026, the sports landscape continues to change. Major legal and economic shifts globally increasingly treat sports as an intellectual property and economic sector, not just about competition and coaching. National sports governance reforms in various countries are starting to recognize athletes’ image rights and commercial value. This hints at a move toward structured opportunities beyond the field.

Draft Ready’s launch not only captures these changes but embodies them, creating a structured system where athletes’ potential aligns with market realities. In today’s sports economy, knowledge about finance, branding, digital strategy, and organizational leadership can hold as much weight as accomplishments on the field.

The Founding 100 Campaign: Scale and Sustainability

To broaden its impact, Draft Ready also started its Founding 100 Campaign. This initiative seeks support from 100 forward-thinking individuals and organizations willing to invest in the movement. Contributions from Founding 100 supporters will help Draft Ready expand its programs, create educational resources, strengthen community partnerships, and reach new cities and regions across the country.

Draft Ready’s online hub, DraftReady.org, offers resources, stories, and information for potential supporters, partners, and student-athletes interested in joining the effort.

Looking Ahead: A Playbook for Empowered Athletes

Draft Ready arrives at a time of opportunity and urgency. With changing economic structures, the rise of digital assets in sports, and a broadening definition of what it means to succeed after high school or college sports, student-athletes need proactive pathways into careers that appreciate their discipline, creativity, and leadership.

Whether driven by financial independence, community impact, or entrepreneurial ambition, Draft Ready equips young athletes to take full advantage of the modern sports economy. In doing so, it aims to reshape both the sports world and society from within.
