Jay-Z Hosts Star-Studded New York Fête for Grandmother Hattie White’s 100th Birthday

Jay-Z returned to his hometown of New York City on Sept. 27 to celebrate a milestone: the 100th birthday of his grandmother, Hattie White. The private gathering drew an A-list crowd, including Beyoncé, her mother Tina Knowles, Megan Thee Stallion and NBA champion Klay Thompson, Nas, and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin.

Music legend Stevie Wonder headlined the evening, performing a special set in Ms. White’s honor. In posts recapping the night, Tina Knowles called the event “a party fit for the Queen,” noting that the Mayor of Brooklyn proclaimed the day “Ms. Hattie White Day.” She added that the room “danced the night away,” praising the Carters for hosting a joyous celebration.

“Stevie said ‘Happy Birthday to Ms Hattie White,’” Tina wrote. “The mayor of Brooklyn declared Sunday Ms. Hattie White Day! The elegant, classy, beautiful lady turned 100 and was celebrated by her family and friends at a party, fit for the Queen she is!!!”

“Stevie Wonder, one of her favorite artist [sic] paid tribute to her with her own private concert!!!,” she added. “Stevie reminded us of the many hits that he’s made!!! We danced the night away. Those Carters know how to party!!!!!!!!!”

A follow-up post showed Stevie serenading Ms. White, “the Golden Lady of the night,” Knowles said.

“What a glorious human being she is,” Tina wrote. “I can hear her famous quote, ‘life gave me lemons and I made lemonade!’ Jay you showed out for your grandma and she deserved every moment of it!

A clip shared on social media showed Jay-Z beaming beside his grandmother, elegant in a blue suit, as she addressed guests next to a towering gold cake. “I want to thank you for coming out and celebrating my 100th birthday,” Ms. White said. “May God bless all of y’all who traveled the road that I have traveled.”

Jay-Z has long credited the women in his family for shaping his life and career. Accepting the NAACP President’s Award in 2019, he dedicated the honor to his mother, Gloria Carter, and grandmother, noting, “I grew up knowing that I could accomplish anything because of those strong women in my house.”

Saturday’s celebration extended that legacy—an intimate, star-filled tribute to the matriarch at the center of the Carter family’s story.
