Kandi Burruss Returns to Broadway in ‘& Juliet’

Kandi Burruss is trading reality TV confessionals for the bright lights again. The former Real Housewives of Atlanta star and Grammy-winning songwriter will join the Broadway cast of & Juliet for a limited run beginning Dec. 11, stepping into the role of Angelique, a maternal confidante to the show’s reimagined Juliet.

According to Playbill, Burruss will take over the role of Angelique, currently held by TikToker Cheryl Porter. “& Juliet” is a pop musical that reimagines the classic Shakespearean tale of “Romeo and Juliet.” Its retelling focuses on if its famed female protagonist never died. As for Burruss’ new character, she plays a maternal figure and confidante for the universe’s Juliet.

Burruss replaces TikTok vocal coach Cheryl Porter in the pop jukebox musical, which flips Shakespeare’s tragedy into a buoyant “what if” tale—what if Juliet didn’t die? Powered by hits from super-producer Max Martin, the show has been a box-office staple and a nine-time Tony Award nominee.

“I could not be more thrilled to return to the Broadway stage in this incredible musical,” shared Burruss in a statement. “As a songwriter myself, I am such a fan of Max Martin’s genius mind, and to get to come back to Broadway in this joyful musical that celebrates his catalog is a dream come true.”

“I could not be more thrilled to return to the Broadway stage in this incredible musical,” Burruss said, calling the chance to help celebrate Martin’s catalog “a dream come true.”

This marks Burruss’s first Broadway acting turn since her 2018 stint as Matron “Mama” Morton in Chicago. In the years since, she’s built a parallel stage career as a producer, with credits including Thoughts of a Colored Man, The Piano Lesson, The Wiz, Othello, and the forthcoming revival of Joe Turner’s Come and Gone.

Burruss is slated to perform in & Juliet through March 8.
