In a lively celebration of resilience, community, and hope, the nonprofit Mentoring Agency for Maternal Adolescents, Inc. (MAMA Inc.) hosted its fourth annual Mother’s Day B.R.E.A.K Away retreat for teen and young mothers on May 3, 2026. This full-day empowerment event focused on healing, self-care, education, and celebration. It attracted participants from across Central Florida and highlighted the nonprofit’s commitment to supporting teen moms during a crucial time in their lives.
The retreat was held in Lakeland and scheduled to honor both Mother’s Day and Mental Health Awareness Month. It sought to change the story around teenage motherhood, shifting it from stigma and statistics to empowerment, dignity, and opportunity. Both organizers and attendees described the event as transformative, emphasizing its focus on mental wellness, community support, and life-building resources.
“The Mother’s Day B.R.E.A.K Away is an experience that is a lifeline of hope, dignity, and restoration for mothers who have fought to rewrite their stories,” said Altrichia Cook Wilcox, founder and executive director of MAMA Inc., according to reports. “Standing in a room filled with young moms and former teen mothers thriving in their purpose reminded me why this work matters so deeply,” she continued. “Its impact on our community is undeniable: when we pour into mothers, we strengthen families, and when we strengthen families, we change futures.”
A Retreat Focused on Restoration and Resilience
The B.R.E.A.K Away experience included therapeutic workshops, luxury self-care, and meaningful connections. Activities featured yoga and guided breathwork to relieve stress, restorative facials and mini massages, along with expert-led sessions on emotional wellness and resilience. Local partners offered their skills to support every aspect of the day, from mental health facilitation to beauty and relaxation services.
The atmosphere, from the gentle yoga mats to the jazz-infused dinner service, was carefully designed to honor mothers not just as caregivers, but as individuals with dreams, worth, and untapped potential.
MAMA Inc. – A Community Anchor
Founded in 2014, MAMA Inc. has evolved from a grassroots mentoring hub into a vital resource for teen moms in Lakeland, Polk County, and the greater Tampa Bay area. The organization offers mentorship, academic support, life skills training, and connections to housing and healthcare resources, all aimed at helping young mothers achieve stability and success beyond parenthood.
National data highlights the significance of such programs: fewer than 2% of teen mothers earn a college degree by age 30, and only about 50% finish high school or earn a GED by 22. These statistics reveal the serious systemic barriers young mothers face and also underscore the potential impact of community-based support systems like MAMA Inc.
Community leaders from business, civic, and veteran organizations also took part, reinforcing the message that teen moms are vital contributors to community health. The involvement of various partners illustrated a growing coalition of stakeholders committed to youth development, economic empowerment, and maternal wellbeing.
Looking Ahead
As MAMA Inc. reflects on the success of the 2026 B.R.E.A.K Away retreat, organizers believe the event’s impact will last well beyond Mother’s Day.
With ongoing partnerships, mentorship pipelines, and plans for expanded services in the year ahead, the nonprofit aims to further strengthen its role as a platform for teen mothers to grow, lead, and thrive.
