Who Is Dystany Spurlock? Meet the Woman Breaking Barriers in NASCAR

In the fast-paced world of American motorsports, Dystany Spurlock is emerging as one of the most exciting and influential figures today. He is an experienced competitor with a background in drag racing, formula schools, and the NASCAR ladder. Spurlock’s 2026 campaign is about more than personal success. It marks a significant step towards diversity and representation in one of the country’s most beloved sports.
From Richmond to Road Courses: A Lifelong Journey With Speed
Dystany Spurlock was born on March 30, 1992, in Richmond, Virginia. Her connection to motorsports started with family visits to local tracks and Sunday afternoons spent watching NASCAR with her parents. This early exposure sparked a lifelong passion for racing, though few predicted the extent of her journey.
“I’m excited for Watkins Glen,” Spurlock shared with reporters earlier this season, recalling the moment she fell in love with racing. “It’s been a while since I’ve raced on a road course, so I’m looking forward to getting back out there. Having the opportunity to compete in ARCA and make my debut in the Truck Series is going to be a lot of fun. I’m focused on learning as much as I can in both the car and the truck, and hopefully we can keep this top-10 momentum going!”
Her first experiences in competitive racing were on two wheels. At just 17, Spurlock made a name for herself in NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle drag racing. She notched wins, set records, and exceeded expectations in a male-dominated sport. In 2024, she made history with a remarkable 7.32-second run at 178 mph in the Real Street class, which quickly raised her profile in the motorsports community.
In addition to drag racing, Spurlock pursued open-wheel competition through the Skip Barber Racing School’s Formula 4 Series in 2023. These experiences deepened her technical knowledge of racing and strengthened her commitment to competing in four-wheeled stock cars.
Making History on NASCAR’s Ladder
The year 2026 is a pivotal one for Dystany Spurlock and for NASCAR. She began the season in the ARCA Menards Series East. In March, she became the first Black woman to start a NASCAR-sanctioned stock car event at Hickory Motor Speedway. Her seventh-place finish in her debut highlighted not only her talent but also the growing legitimacy of her campaign on the national stage.

Her momentum continued in April at Kansas Speedway, where she finished in the top ten (10th in the Tide 150) against a strong field of experienced competitors. In one of the season’s standout performances, Spurlock charged through the pack from the back after qualifying was rained out, showcasing her discipline and resilience on a fast, challenging oval. “It was an amazing day,” she said, acknowledging the late-race contact that nearly hindered her progress but ultimately showcased her car control and determination.
This success led to an even more historic weekend on May 8, 2026. Spurlock became the first Black woman to attempt to qualify and race in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, one of NASCAR’s three major touring divisions, at Watkins Glen International. The race’s unique doubleheader format paired her national ARCA start on the tough 2.45-mile road course with a Truck Series appearance driving the No. 69 Toyota Tundra TRD for MBM Motorsports and Garage 66.
Despite facing challenging weather conditions and tough competition, she did not make the official qualifying field for the Truck race. However, her presence in the paddock and progress through practice drew praise from industry observers, fans, and fellow competitors.
Driving Change Beyond the Track
Spurlock’s rise is more than just a symbol. Industry leaders see her story as an opportunity to change how NASCAR and motorsports engage with audiences who have historically been underrepresented in the sport.
“Dystany’s docuseries takes viewers inside a journey most people never see—the real path to becoming a NASCAR driver, told through her lived experience of a Black woman in this space.” Chris Harris says, co-founder of Foxxtecca, a cultural and automotive platform supporting her campaign. “It’s not just about building her audience or authentically highlighting diversity, it’s about expanding the audience for motorsports while directly challenging and exposing the assumptions that have kept too many people on the outside looking in.”
Her cultural impact is also growing through a docuseries about her 2026 journey, Driven by Dystany: The Road to NASCAR. This series has expanded her reach beyond traditional racing fans to a wider lifestyle and empowerment audience.
Outside of racing, Spurlock has taken on roles that promote better representation in motorsports. Since 2024, she has been on the Board of Directors for the African American Automotive Association, an organization advocating for diversity and inclusion in the automotive and racing industries.
The Road Ahead: Goals and Legacy
At 34, Dystany Spurlock remains focused on her goals. She aims to keep developing in ARCA and secure more national series starts, ultimately working toward a full season and opportunities at the Cup Series level.
In the long run, she hopes to create a broader environment where young people, especially girls and drivers of color, see a future for themselves in racing, whether in the driver’s seat, the garage, or the engineering room.
As NASCAR continues to move towards a more inclusive future, Spurlock’s name may soon be mentioned alongside the sport’s most inspiring pioneers, not just for her achievements but for the path she is carving for others to follow.
