Daniel Kaluuya to Be Honored with Statue in London for Iconic Role in Get Out

Oscar-winning actor Daniel Kaluuya will soon be honored with a statue in his hometown of London to celebrate his breakout role in the 2017 movie Get Out.

The statue will show the famous ‘Sunken Place’ scene from the movie, where Kaluuya’s character falls into a deep, hypnotic state. It will be unveiled in October in Leicester Square as part of the “Scenes in the Square” trail, which celebrates famous moments in cinema.

Kaluuya was chosen for this honor through a poll of 5,000 British film fans, where he received one-fifth of the votes. The statue will join others in Leicester Square, including figures like Harry Potter, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Mary Poppins.

Kaluuya’s statue will represent the success of modern cinema and highlight his role as one of the U.K.’s top actors.

Mark Williams, deputy chief executive of the Heart of London Business Alliance, said, “We’re excited to add Daniel Kaluuya and Get Out to the trail. This is a celebration of his amazing work and homegrown British talent. His statue shows a bright future for our trail and the world of entertainment.”

Get Out was a turning point in Kaluuya’s career, leading him to roles in movies like Black Panther, Judas and the Black Messiah (which won him an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor), and Nope.

The movie also made director Jordan Peele a top name in Hollywood. Made with a small budget of less than $5 million, Get Out went on to earn over $250 million worldwide, setting box office records and winning Peele the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

The statue will be revealed in October, during both Halloween and Black History Month in the U.K., tying in with the movie’s horror themes and its focus on the experiences of Black Americans.
