Jodie Turner-Smith Calls on Disney to Take Stronger Action Against Racism and Online Abuse

Actress Jodie Turner-Smith has had enough of the racist trolling and the studios that remain silent on the issue. In an interview with Glamour UK, where she was honored as one of the magazine’s Women of the Year, Turner-Smith spoke out against the abuse she and other actors have faced since joining the cast of Disney’s Star Wars: The Acolyte.

“They’ve got to stop doing this thing where they don’t say anything when people are getting f*king dog-piled on the internet with racism and bullsht,” she told Glamour. “It’s just not fair to not say anything.

It’s really unfair.” The actress called on studios like Disney to take a firm stand, saying, “It would just be nice if the people that have all the money… were showing their support and putting their feet down. Say this is unacceptable: ‘You’re not a fan if you do this.’”

Turner-Smith pointed out that Black people and people of color represent a significant portion of consumer spending, and dismissing their support could be a costly mistake for studios. “They might find that it’s actually more lucrative for them,” she added, “but everyone’s using ‘woke’ like it’s a dirty word.”

Her co-star Amandla Stenberg has also been vocal about the racist backlash surrounding The Acolyte. Speaking to PEOPLE Magazine, Stenberg said, “I’m going to be transparent and say it’s not a huge shock for me.”

She revealed that the cast had faced a wave of racist vitriol since the project’s announcement. “We started experiencing hyper-conservative bigotry, prejudice, and hateful language,” Stenberg said, adding that she had to stay true to her values, even while working for a major studio like Disney.

Turner-Smith and Stenberg are not alone in calling out the toxic culture among some Star Wars fans. Actor John Boyega has also spoken about the racism he endured during his time with the franchise.

“It makes you angry,” Boyega said, describing how he was singled out for playing a Stormtrooper because of his race. He shared that he received death threats and had to deal with boycotts that none of his white co-stars faced. “Nobody else had that experience,” he noted. “But yet people are surprised that I’m this way. That’s my frustration.”

Despite its high-profile cast and significant budget, The Acolyte was canceled after just one season, with reports citing low ratings and high production costs as the reason for its abrupt end.
