Norwalk Launches Inaugural Black Wall Street Festival Celebrating Black Entrepreneurs

In a move that connects history, culture, and economic strength, Norwalk, Connecticut, will host its first Black Wall Street Festival. This event aims to highlight Black entrepreneurship while reclaiming a powerful legacy of resilience and success.

According to the official announcement, the festival is scheduled for May 30, 2026. It will take place on the city’s central green from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. It will be free to the public, making it both a cultural celebration and an inclusive community gathering.

A Festival Steeped in History and Purpose

Community organizer Eva Beau leads the festival. He describes it as a way to connect past achievements with current ambitions.

“We are celebrating the Greenwood District and our people being able to survive and thrive,” Beau explained, referring to the historic Black business district in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The timing is intentional. The event will occur one day before the anniversary of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, a tragedy that destroyed the original “Black Wall Street.” By holding the festival around this date, organizers aim to shift focus from loss to legacy, showcasing Black economic success and continuity.

Beau recognized initial doubts about using the term “Black Wall Street,” but ultimately stated it is “nonnegotiable,” highlighting its significance in reminding future generations of what is possible.

What to Expect: Entrepreneurs, Culture, and Community

The festival will feature 27 businesses from a variety of industries and creative fields. Attendees can look forward to:

• Fashion and retail vendors showcasing locally made goods
• Authors engaging with audiences and presenting their books
• Wellness practitioners, including a yoga instructor
• Film and storytelling from independent filmmakers
• Culinary experiences led by award-winning chef Jeff Esaw

The event also emphasizes intergenerational connections. Organizers plan to honor elders in the community, including former business owners, recognizing their contributions to Norwalk’s economic and cultural history.

“We definitely want to give props to those who have come before us,” Beau said, stressing the importance of recognition and continuity.

Economic and Social Significance

Norwalk, a growing coastal city with a population over 95,000 as of 2026, has experienced changes in its demographic makeup. This includes a decrease in its Black population over the last decade.

In this context, the festival is more than just a one-day event; it is a cultural initiative aimed at strengthening community bonds and encouraging inclusive economic participation.

Beau described the project as a way to build connections: “We want the best for one another. Once you get to know another person’s culture, it really makes a difference.”
