Elon Musk’s Tesla stock jumped by 12% in premarket trading on Wednesday after Donald Trump was re-elected as president. This surge is pushing Tesla’s shares to a new record high and has investors feeling optimistic about what Trump’s win might mean for the electric vehicle (EV) giant.
Analysts believe that while Trump’s policies may challenge the EV industry as a whole, Tesla could come out on top.
What’s Happening with Tesla
Tesla’s shares reached over $283 in early trading, beating its previous record of $273.54 from late October. During his victory speech, Trump praised Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, calling him a “super genius” and a “new star” for supporting his campaign and helping to drum up votes, especially in Pennsylvania.
According to Dan Ives, an analyst at Wedbush Securities, Trump’s second term might create obstacles for EV companies due to fewer government incentives. However, he believes Tesla is well-prepared to handle this because it’s the largest and most established EV company.
Trump’s planned tariffs on Chinese imports could also benefit Tesla by making it harder for Chinese EV companies like BYD and NIO to enter the U.S. market, reducing competition.
If Tesla’s stock increase holds, Elon Musk’s net worth could go up by $12.1 billion. With an estimated fortune of $265.7 billion, Musk is already the wealthiest person in the world, and Tesla’s growth is expected to boost his wealth even more.
Musk’s Support for Trump’s Campaign
Musk was a major backer of Trump’s 2024 campaign, contributing more than $118 million through his America PAC, making him one of Trump’s top supporters. His PAC also attracted attention with a $1 million giveaway for voters in swing states, though this faced a brief legal pause.
Trump has also promised to start a “government efficiency commission,” an idea Musk suggested, with Musk indicating he might lead it.
Throughout the campaign, Musk joined Trump at rallies and promoted him online. While Trump has shown support for electric vehicles, he’s been inconsistent, sometimes saying EVs cost too much and warning that many are made in China.
Tesla’s early stock rise shows investor confidence in the potential benefits Musk and Tesla could see from Trump’s re-election. Analysts will be watching closely to see how Trump’s policies impact Tesla and the EV industry going forward.
