Who Is Dr. Ayanna Howard? The AI Pioneer Named Spelman College’s New President

In a historic appointment that marks a new chapter for one of the nation’s most respected higher-education institutions, Dr. Ayanna Howard has been named the 12th president of Spelman College. She is a well-known expert in artificial intelligence and robotics, and Spelman is the leading historically Black college for women in the country.

The announcement was made on June 5 by the Spelman College Board of Trustees after a months-long national search. Howard will take office on August 1, 2026. She will serve as an important academic leader and a representation of Black women’s growing role in technology and education.

From Robotics Labs to the Leadership of an HBCU

Howard’s career reflects the innovations of the 21st century. Currently, she is the Dean of the College of Engineering at The Ohio State University. She holds the prestigious Monte Ahuja Endowed Dean’s Chair and is known for her work creating technologies that combine robotics, AI, and human-centered design.

Before her role at Ohio State, Howard worked at top research institutions, including NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the Georgia Institute of Technology. There, she developed autonomous systems and led research teams that pushed the boundaries of intelligent machines.

Her leadership goes beyond academia. She co-founded Zyrobotics, a tech company that focuses on creating educational and therapeutic tools for children disability. She also helped start Black in Robotics, an organization aimed at increasing representation in the robotics field.

While Howard’s résumé showcases her impressive background in AI and engineering, her public comments reflect a strong commitment to students. After her appointment, she stated that Spelman’s mission must adapt to the rapidly changing world: “Students choose Spelman because they want to make a difference in the world. As the world changes, we must equip them to thrive.”

Her views align with a common belief in technology: innovation should center around human needs. In a recent interview with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Howard emphasized that technological growth must prioritize human values. This is a priority she intends to incorporate into Spelman’s academic goals.

Spelman College, founded in 1881, has a long history of educating Black women who become influential figures in various fields, including civic leadership, science, business, and the arts. Currently, Spelman holds the No. 1 ranking among historically Black colleges and universities by U.S. News & World Report, a title it has maintained for almost twenty years.

Lovette Russell, Chair of the Board of Trustees, expressed the institution’s feelings in a statement: “Dr. Howard is the visionary leader Spelman needs at this pivotal moment in our history… she understands the opportunities and challenges shaping higher education today.”

Her appointment follows efforts to improve access and opportunity through engagement with trustees, faculty, students, staff, alumnae, and community members.
