Donald Trump Claims Kamala Harris ‘Suddenly Turned Black’ for Political Reasons

At a recent National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) Convention covered by MSNBC, former President Donald Trump made controversial remarks about Vice President Kamala Harris’s racial identity.

Trump claimed he was unaware of Harris’s race until a few years ago and suggested she only recently began identifying as Black to advance her political career. “I’ve known her a long time, indirectly, and she was always of Indian heritage,” Trump said during a panel discussion with three Black female journalists.

ABC News Correspondent Rachel Scott challenged Trump’s assertion, defending Harris by highlighting her consistent self-identification as a Black woman and her education at Howard University, a historically Black institution. Despite Scott’s intervention, Trump continued to assert that Harris had changed her racial identification for political gain.

Following the event, Harris, speaking at a Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Convention in Houston, dismissed Trump’s comments as divisive and disrespectful. “The American people deserve better,” she stated.

Responses to Trump’s comments from Harris’s camp and allies were swift and sharp. Doug Emhoff, Harris’s husband and the Second Gentleman, described Trump’s remarks as showing a “worse version of an already horrible person.” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre echoed this sentiment, calling the remarks “repulsive” and “insulting,” and emphasized the inappropriateness of questioning someone’s racial identity.
