'Game of Thrones' Iron Throne Sells for Nearly $1.5 Million at Auction

Fans of “Game of Thrones” gathered in large numbers for an auction that sold hundreds of items from the famous HBO series, bringing in over $21 million. The auction, hosted by Heritage Auctions in Dallas from Thursday to Saturday, included more than 900 pieces such as armor, swords, and jewelry from the show.

The main attraction was the Iron Throne, which sold for $1.49 million after a six-minute bidding battle. This throne, made of plastic and painted to look like metal, was designed based on the one used in the series.

In “Game of Thrones,” this throne was created by melting swords with dragon fire, symbolizing the intense fight for power seen throughout the series

“These are extraordinary treasures made by Emmy-winning costume designers and prop makers, who worked tirelessly to adapt George R.R. Martin’s wonderful novels,” Maddalena said. “People wanted a piece of that ‘Game of Thrones’ magic.”,

Starting bids ranged from $500 to $20,000, but several items went for thousands of dollars more. Such was the case for several cloaks and dresses worn by Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen and Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister.

Various costumes were among the items on sale, including, from left, armor worn by Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane, Jon Snow’s Night’s Watch ensemble and Jaime Lannister’s full Kingsguard armor.

A gray suede ensemble worn by Daenerys sold for $112,500, exactly $100,000 over its starting bid, and the red velvet dress Cersei wears in her final appearance on the show went for $137,500, which was $122,500 over its starting bid.

.Heritage Auctions revealed that the event earned $21.1 million from over 4,500 bidders, making it one of their most successful auctions. Joe Maddalena, the Executive Vice President of Heritage, noted that the items were made by award-winning designers and were highly sought after because they brought to life the world created by George R.R. Martin in his books.

Among the high-selling items were Jon Snow’s sword, Longclaw, which went for $400,000, and his Night’s Watch outfit, which sold for $337,500. Costumes worn by Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen and Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister also fetched high prices, far exceeding their initial bids.

Armor sets were popular too, with Jaime Lannister’s Kingsguard armor and the Queensguard armor worn by Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane each bringing in over $200,000.

Reflecting on the auction, Jay Roewe, HBO’s senior vice president of global incentives and production planning, said, “’Game of Thrones’ was a key moment in our culture and in high-end television. It significantly impacted our culture.” This sale highlights how the series continues to be influential, even five years after its last episode aired.

Keep up the fantastic work!
