Zendaya Honors Cher with Sparkling Vintage Gown

At the 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, actress Zendaya paid tribute to Cher by dressing just like her. Zendaya wore a sparkling vintage gown designed by Bob Mackie in 2001, similar to one Cher wore in 1972. The dress had an open top and straps around the middle, mimicking Cher’s famous style.

Zendaya’s outfit was just one part of her homage. She styled her dark hair straight and parted in the middle, hanging long down her back, which is another look often associated with Cher. During the ceremony, Zendaya thanked Cher for being a role model and helping many people feel free to express who they are.

Bob Mackie, a famous American costume designer, has been creating standout outfits for Cher for over sixty years. These outfits include a sheer, decorated jumpsuit Cher wore to the 1974 Met Gala and a dramatic dress with a feather headdress for the 1986 Oscars. Mackie’s designs have helped make Cher a fashion icon, often featured in the news.

American costume designer Bob Mackie has long been associated with Cher and her glittering music career. Mackie created countless high-octane, ab-exposing looks for the artist over six decades — from the sheer embellished jumpsuit worn to the 1974 Met Gala to Cher’s notorious 1986 Oscars frock, complete with sky-high feather headdress.

Mackie even made Cher a custom, ultra-glamorous Cleopatra Halloween costume in 1988. “Every time (Cher) wore one of those get-ups, it would be in the paper the next day — all over the country,” Mackie said in an interview with Fashionista in 2019.

When a reporter mentioned she still “could bring it,” referring to her iconic style, Cher responded confidently, “I’ve brought it, baby,” acknowledging her long history of fashion leadership.
