Willow Smith Sci-Fi ‘Black Shield Maiden’ Set to be Released This May

Black Shield Maiden, the sci-fi fantasy novel authored by Willow Smith, is set to grace bookshelves come May. 

Co-written by Jess Hendel and published by Penguin Random House, the same powerhouse behind her father’s acclaimed bestseller, this eagerly awaited tale promises to whisk readers away on an unforgettable journey.

According to the publisher’s website, Black Shield Maiden delves into the story of a teenage girl abducted from her West African oasis. 

The narrative unfolds with Yafeu, a spirited young warrior ripped from her home in the prosperous Ghānaian empire and thrust into the unfamiliar confines of a distant northern kingdom. 

There, amidst a chilling landscape of savage shield maidens, autocratic rulers, and enigmatic deities, Yafeu’s resilience is put to the test.

Originally slated for release in October 2022, the novel’s debut was postponed following accusations of historical inaccuracies and offensive portrayals of African culture, to which Smith has yet to publicly respond.

However, the revised edition has garnered accolades, including a commendation from esteemed author Tomi Adeyemi, who lauds its blend of intimacy, tenderness, and epic grandeur.

Fans eagerly anticipating the release can mark their calendars for a special event at the Strand Bookstore in New York City on May 7. 

Willow Smith, Hendel, and Adeyemi will engage in a discussion and book signing, promising an evening of literary delight.

In a 2022 interview with NME, the “Whip My Hair” singer expressed her aspiration to inspire through her work.
