Three of the 10 inmates who escaped from the Orleans Parish Correctional Facility on May 16 have been recaptured, bringing the total number of returned fugitives to eight. Law enforcement agencies in Louisiana and Texas confirmed the arrests over the weekend.
According to Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill, two escapees — Leo Tate and Jermaine Donald — were located and arrested in Walker County, Texas, while a third, Lenton Vanburen, was taken into custody by Baton Rouge Police. All three were apprehended on May 26.
“This brings us closer to restoring order and ensuring public safety,” Murrill posted on social media.
Background and Charges
Authorities say Lenton Vanburen had initially been jailed for parole violations and weapons charges, including possession of a firearm by a felon and illegal carrying of a weapon.
Leo Tate, another escapee, was facing burglary charges and was also being held for attempted second-degree murder. Jermaine Donald had been incarcerated on charges including second-degree murder, aggravated battery, and possession of a firearm by a felon.
The mass escape from the Orleans Parish facility has been described as the largest jailbreak in Louisiana history, prompting a multi-state manhunt and heightened security measures across the region.
Ongoing Investigation and Arrests of Accomplices
As the manhunt continues, Louisiana State Police have announced a series of arrests tied to individuals accused of aiding the escapees.
The following individuals have been booked into Plaquemines Parish Jail in connection with the incident:
- Diamond White (21) – Charged with Principal to Aggravated Escape and Obstruction of Justice, allegedly for assisting Antoine Massey, who remains at large.
- Lenika Vanburen (28), Tyshanea Randolph (27), Patricia Vanburen (18), Angel McKay (41), and Lenton Vanburen Sr. (48) – All charged as accessories after the fact for aiding fugitive Lenton Vanburen.
Authorities emphasized that more arrests may follow as the investigation unfolds.
