Fugees Rapper Pras Michel Has Sentencing Delayed Following Emergency Cancer Surgery

Pras Michel, a founding member of the Fugees, has had his federal court sentencing postponed after undergoing emergency surgery for colon cancer, a representative for his legal team confirmed to Complex.
Originally scheduled for August 29, the sentencing is now set for October 3. Michel faces up to 20 years in prison following his conviction last year on multiple felony charges.
Conviction in 1MDB Scandal
In April 2023, a Washington, D.C., jury found Michel guilty on 10 felony counts, including conspiracy, witness tampering, and failing to register as an agent of China. The charges stemmed from his ties to Malaysian billionaire Jho Low, accused of embezzling billions from the country’s sovereign wealth fund, 1MDB.
The U.S. Justice Department has described the case as the largest kleptocracy prosecution in U.S. history, with prosecutors arguing that Michel used his celebrity connections to funnel foreign money into American politics and influence decisions at the highest levels.
Since his conviction, Michel has sought a retrial, alleging that his former attorney, David Kenner, mishandled his defense. According to court filings, Kenner controversially relied on artificial intelligence software to draft closing arguments, an experimental move that Michel’s current legal team argues contributed to the unfavorable verdict.
The Trump Connection
Adding another layer to the high-profile case, it was reported in early 2024 that Donald Trump considered granting Michel a pardon during his presidency. The two men share an unlikely history: Trump appeared on Michel’s 1998 solo album Ghetto Supastar in a voicemail message wishing the rapper success in his career.
While the Trump pardon never materialized, Michel’s legal team has said it is “exploring all available options” as his October sentencing approaches.
