A routine argument over a drive-thru order at a Tim Hortons coffeehouse ended in tragedy last week. Local officials, law enforcement, and community members are now calling for clear information amid speculation. On the morning of May 13, 2026, 75-year-old Anita Grayson entered the Tim Hortons at 3975 Ice Way in Fort Wayne to address what she believed was an incorrect order, according to police and reports.
Surveillance footage from inside the store shows Grayson approaching a 17-year-old employee, visibly upset, and getting into a verbal fight. When a 20-year-old shift lead stepped in and asked Grayson to leave, the situation turned into a physical struggle between the two. Witness accounts reviewed by police indicate that both made contact, with Grayson pushing and hitting the shift lead, who reacted defensively.
Officials with the Fort Wayne Police Department have carefully outlined the sequence of events without jumping to conclusions. A preliminary coroner review found no significant injuries that could alone explain Grayson’s death.
Mayor Sharon Tucker spoke to the community on May 19 according to reports, urging residents “to not draw conclusions until all of the facts have been released”. Her office highlighted the seriousness of an old patron’s death and the sensitivity of investigating workplace conflicts.
Grayson’s family has publicly mentioned her medical history, including congestive heart failure, as a contributing factor. They raised concerns about how the situation was handled, stating from reports, “you should not enter a coffee shop for a coffee and a doughnut and come out unalived.”
The Tim Hortons location remains open, and the employees involved are still on staff. Authorities say they will provide more evidence and updates as the investigation continues, stressing the need for careful, fact-based reporting in a case that has already caught significant public attention.
