Black-Owned Big Dave's Cheesesteaks Expands to North Carolina and Florida

A lot of people will soon savour the flavours of Big Dave’s Cheesesteaks as the popular black-owned food brand announces its expansion into North Carolina and Florida.

Founded in Atlanta by Derrick Hayes, a native of West Philadelphia, Big Dave’s Cheesesteaks quickly became a local favourite, leading to multiple locations throughout Georgia.

Now, the restaurant is celebrating its first out-of-state opening in Charlotte, North Carolina. Hayes hosted a grand opening event on May 11, allowing the community to experience his famed cheesesteaks.

“From a humble gas station start to expanding across state lines, the journey of Big Dave’s Cheesesteaks has been nothing short of extraordinary,” Hayes shared in a press release obtained by Afrotech.

“As we open our first out-of-state location in Queen City, I’m filled with a sense of disbelief and immense pride. This milestone is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and unwavering belief that has propelled us forward. The road ahead is paved with endless possibilities, and I’m excited to continue writing the next chapter of our story.”

In addition to the Charlotte location, Hayes signed a deal in 2023 to open 10 more locations throughout Florida. This expansion will be in partnership with former PepsiCo executive Derrick Lewis, who will help establish the franchise in the Sunshine State.

Amid his business success, Hayes remains committed to giving back. He founded the David and Derrick Hayes Foundation to support cancer research and created a college fund for students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Alongside his wife, Pinky Cole, CEO of Slutty Vegan, Hayes has dedicated part of their mission to community support, offering financial and mental assistance to people of all backgrounds.
