Colorado Buffaloes head football coach and NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders has revealed he is now cancer-free, following a private battle with bladder cancer that led to the removal of his bladder earlier this summer.
The 57-year-old coach made the announcement during a press conference on Monday, July 28, where he was joined by his urologic oncologist, Dr. Janet Kukreja, and athletic trainer Lauren Askevold. Sanders, who had kept his diagnosis out of the public eye, opened up for the first time about the intense health journey he’s faced in recent months.
“It’s been a tremendous journey,” Sanders said. He shared that he lost 25 pounds during treatment and recovery, and lightheartedly added, “I can’t pee like I used to pee… I depend on Depends,” acknowledging the physical changes he’s adjusting to.
Despite the seriousness of the ordeal, Sanders assured reporters that he is officially in remission and fully committed to returning for his third season at Colorado. “I always knew I was going to coach again,” he said, dismissing any speculation about stepping down from his role.

This is not the first time Sanders has faced serious health challenges. In 2021, he underwent multiple surgeries, including the amputation of two toes due to complications from blood clots. Nevertheless, he remains undeterred.
Earlier this year, Sanders signed a five-year extension with the University of Colorado, reportedly valued at over $10 million annually. The contract includes provisions requiring him to inform the university if he is absent for more than five consecutive workdays and allows for potential termination if he becomes unable to perform his core duties—even with reasonable accommodations.
Speaking candidly, Sanders used his platform to urge others—particularly African-American men, to prioritise regular health check-ups. “Men, everybody, get checked out… especially African-American men,” he said. “It’s tough. But I’m tougher.”
