5 Safe Countries for Black People

Looking for destinations where safety, dignity, and community are more than buzzwords? These five countries pair low crime and strong rule-of-law with anti-racism frameworks and vibrant Black/diaspora scenes.

No country is racism-free, but the signals below, peace indices, laws, and official advisories, make these solid picks for Black travelers planning stress-free trips.

1) Canada

Canada couples relatively low violent crime with national strategies that explicitly target anti-Black racism, useful if you ever need recourse.

Ottawa has launched a 10-year Black Justice Strategy with an implementation plan spanning nine federal departments, alongside Canada’s Anti-Racism Strategy 2024–2028, to reform systems from policing to housing.

For travelers, that means clearer reporting pathways and a public policy focus on equity. Toronto, Montréal, and Ottawa also host large, diverse Black communities.

2) New Zealand

Regularly near the top of global safety rankings, New Zealand offers low day-to-day crime, strong social norms around fairness, and clear legal protections.

The Human Rights Act prohibits discrimination on grounds including colour, race, and ethnic or national origins; complaints can be escalated through established bodies. Add in the country’s high peace score and laid-back culture, and cities like Auckland and Wellington feel easy to navigate for solo or family trips.

3) Portugal

Portugal blends top-tier safety with a friendly tourism culture and a growing Afro-diaspora scene in Lisbon and Porto.

It sits in the top 10 of the 2025 Global Peace Index, and its equality bodies, such as the Commission for Equality and Against Racial Discrimination (CICDR), offer mechanisms to report racist incidents.

Practical bonus: good public transport, English widely understood in tourist zones, and straightforward SIM/banking options for visitors.

4) Barbados (Caribbean)

A warm, Black-majority society with a well-oiled tourism machine, Barbados is one of the easiest beach escapes for Black travelers seeking comfort and community.

The U.S. State Department rates it Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions, its lowest risk tier, so standard big-city awareness goes a long way. Bridgetown and the South Coast are lively, with welcoming nightlife and accessible medical care if needed.

5) Singapore

If you prize order and ultra-low violent crime, Singapore is elite. The city-state ranks 6th worldwide on the 2025 Global Peace Index and regularly tops “societal safety and security” metrics. It’s spotless, multilingual (English is official), and hyper-efficient, from airport transfers to late-night food.

Expect strict laws (e.g., on littering and controlled substances), but that predictability is exactly what many travelers value.
