Detroit Pistons guard Malik Beasley is under federal investigation over allegations that he placed bets on NBA games, including proposition wagers, during the 2023–2024 season when he played for the Milwaukee Bucks, according to a report from ESPN.
Sources say the inquiry is being led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York, the same office behind a widening probe into illegal sports betting within professional basketball. Both the NBA and the Pistons have confirmed they are aware of the investigation.
“We are cooperating with the federal prosecutors’ investigation,” NBA spokesman Mike Bass said in a statement.
Beasley’s attorney, Steve Haney, emphasized that his client has not been charged.
“An investigation is not a charge,” Haney told ESPN. “Malik is afforded the same right of the presumption of innocence as anyone else under the U.S. Constitution.” Haney also confirmed to ABC News that he has been in contact with prosecutors involved in the case.
The investigation into Beasley comes as the NBA faces mounting scrutiny over player involvement in illegal betting activity. In April 2024, the league permanently banned Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter after it was revealed he had bet on games and deliberately exited matches early to affect wagers.
Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier has also reportedly been under investigation for gambling, though the NBA said it found no violation of league rules.
Beasley’s situation could have contractual implications. The 27-year-old sharpshooter was reportedly in advanced discussions with the Pistons on a three-year, $42 million deal. Those talks have now stalled amid the ongoing investigation.
In his debut season with Detroit, Beasley played all 82 games, averaging 16.3 points per contest and setting a new franchise record with 319 made 3-pointers.
