As Black History Month takes place across the U.S., the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is returning to Atlanta’s historic Fox Theatre from Feb. 11 to Feb. 15. They will present a powerful mix of new choreography, favorite works, and community programs.
These programs highlight Black artistry, culture, and the lasting impact of the company’s founder, Alvin Ailey.
Founded in 1958 by African American choreographer Alvin Ailey, the company has served as a cultural ambassador for Black dance and modern American choreography for over sixty years. Ailey’s iconic work, “Revelations,” is considered an American masterpiece.
It celebrates African American spirituals, blues, and gospel, exploring themes of sorrow and joy through movement and music. This year’s Atlanta engagement includes six performances that connect the company’s past and future.
Audiences will witness world premieres like “Embrace” by Frederick Earl Mosley and “Song of the Anchorite” by Jamar Roberts, along with a company premiere of Medhi Walerski’s “Blink of an Eye” and a new version of Judith Jamison’s “A Case of You.”
The season also showcases Ronald K. Brown’s rhythmic “Grace” and the cherished “Revelations.”
“We want people to see themselves in the work,” dancer Jacquelin Harris said about the programs. These programs blend music familiar to many, such as pieces by Stevie Wonder and Maxwell, with dynamic choreography that reflects modern Black experiences.
Under the artistic direction of Alicia Graf Mack, a former Ailey dancer and respected educator, the company’s Atlanta performances honor history while embracing innovation.
The Fox Theatre season also connects to wider cultural celebrations in Atlanta, where Black History Month events include film screenings, concerts, festivals, and dance conferences.
For decades, Ailey’s company has made Atlanta a regular stop. They connect audiences to the spiritual and cultural roots of modern dance while celebrating Black heritage through movement that is emotionally rich and technically precise.
