Former NFL quarterback Cam Newton is enjoying a big week of career milestones. Just days after Auburn University announced it will retire his No. 2 jersey, ESPN revealed that Newton has signed a multi-year deal with the network.
Under the agreement, the former NFL MVP will expand his role on ESPN’s flagship debate show, First Take, alongside Stephen A. Smith, Molly Qerim, and Chris “Mad Dog” Russo. Newton’s first appearance under the new contract will be Aug. 28, during the show’s HBCU Tour stop at Norfolk State University.
“I am excited to be back with the First Take team and share my voice on all things sports,” Newton said in a statement. “This is an incredible opportunity for me to connect with fans and bring my passion and knowledge to a show I’ve always admired.”
ESPN executives praised Newton’s energy and authenticity. “Cam Newton is a unique talent who is authentically himself, and that’s a key ingredient for success on First Take,” said David Roberts, ESPN’s executive vice president for sports news and entertainment.
Auburn to Retire Newton’s Jersey
The ESPN deal comes shortly after Newton’s alma mater, Auburn University, announced it will retire his jersey this fall. The ceremony will take place on Oct. 11, when the Tigers host the University of Georgia at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
Newton will become just the fourth Auburn player to receive the honor, joining Pat Sullivan (No. 7), Bo Jackson (No. 34), and Terry Beasley (No. 88).
Although Newton only played one season at Auburn, his impact was historic. In 2010, he threw for 2,854 yards and 30 touchdowns, rushed for 1,473 yards and 20 touchdowns, and even caught a touchdown pass—becoming the first player in SEC history to pass for over 2,000 yards and rush for over 1,000 yards in a single season.
That year, he led Auburn to a national championship and won the Heisman Trophy, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest college football players of all time.
