Michael Archer II, the only child of D’Angelo and the late Angie Stone, has issued a public message of thanks and resilience following his father’s death on 14 October 2025. D’Angelo, born Michael Eugene Archer, died at 51 after what the family called a “prolonged and courageous battle with cancer.”
Multiple outlets have reported the illness as pancreatic cancer.
In a statement shared the day his father died, the 27-year-old—who performs as Swayvo Train—thanked fans for their support. “It has been a very rough and sad year for me… one thing that both my parents taught me was to be strong, and I intend to do just that,” he said, asking the public to keep him in their thoughts.
People close to the family said D’Angelo had been hospitalized for months and spent two weeks in hospice before his death in New York.
Archer II’s message comes just seven months after the death of his mother, Angie Stone, 63, who was killed in March 2025 in a crash in Alabama after a performance. Her family has since filed a wrongful-death lawsuit, alleging she initially survived the wreck but was struck by a tractor-trailer while attempting to exit the overturned van.
D’Angelo’s family and estate announced his passing with a tribute to his artistic legacy: “The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life… we are heartbroken,” they said, adding gratitude for the “extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind.”
The neo-soul pioneer—whose albums Brown Sugar (1995), Voodoo (2000) and Black Messiah (2014) reshaped modern R&B—had a complicated relationship with fame but remained a towering influence across generations of musicians. Tributes from artists and fans have poured in since Tuesday
