Calvin Butler isn’t just leading one of the largest utility companies in the U.S., he’s reshaping what leadership looks like in an industry at the crossroads of innovation, equity, and environmental transformation.

As the President and CEO of Exelon Corporation, Butler sits at the helm of a Fortune 200 energy giant that serves over 10 million customers across six major U.S. cities, including Chicago, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C.

But his journey to the top wasn’t scripted—it was earned through decades of strategic thinking, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to people.

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Butler grew up with a strong sense of community and responsibility, shaped by a family that valued education and perseverance. After earning his B.A. from Bradley University and his J.D. from Washington University School of Law in St. Louis, Butler entered the corporate world with a background in regulatory law, an asset that would later distinguish his leadership in the tightly regulated energy sector.

His rise within Exelon has been steady and impactful. Starting at the company’s Baltimore-based utility, BGE (Baltimore Gas and Electric), Butler quickly proved himself as a leader who could manage complexity and drive transformation.

As CEO of BGE, he spearheaded critical modernisation initiatives, improved customer satisfaction, and navigated regulatory frameworks with agility. By 2022, Butler was named CEO of Exelon—a move that marked him as one of the few Black chief executives of a major American corporation.

Under his leadership, Exelon has leaned into a future powered by clean energy and equitable opportunity. Butler has prioritized grid modernization, decarbonization, and economic empowerment in underserved communities—understanding that the future of energy must serve everyone, not just a privileged few.

Butler also champions diversity in leadership, both internally and externally.
