Bill Kapri, widely known as rapper Kodak Black, was honored with the key to his hometown of Pompano Beach, Florida, in a ceremony recognizing his contributions to the community. The city made the announcement on July 8 via its official social media channels.
“Today, the City of Pompano Beach honored Grammy-nominated rapper and philanthropist @kodakblack with the Key to the City, recognizing his outstanding generosity and lasting impact on the community,” read the city’s statement.
Kodak Black was recognized for a series of charitable acts, including donating air conditioners to residents during extreme heat, distributing turkeys to families during the holidays, providing Christmas gifts for local children, and paying rent for hundreds of residents in need.
The decision to honor Black comes despite his history of legal issues. In 2019, he was sentenced to 46 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to weapons charges, although the sentence was commuted by President Donald Trump in January 2021.
Kodak Black was also sentenced to probation in 2021 following an assault case involving a teenage girl in South Carolina.
This is not the first time Kodak Black has been acknowledged by his hometown. In June 2021, he received a proclamation from then-Commissioner Dale Holness, who praised the rapper’s philanthropic work.
At the time, Holness stated, “I believe in redemption. I believe every human being has the ability to redeem themselves from whatever wrong they’ve done.”
Following that proclamation, city officials revised the process for issuing such honors to ensure stricter protocols are observed.
