A rare autographed Michael Jordan rookie card from the 1986–87 Fleer collection has sold for an eye-popping $2.5 million through Joopiter, the auction house founded by music and fashion mogul Pharrell Williams. The sale sets a new benchmark as the most expensive Jordan rookie card ever sold.
The record-breaking auction, first reported by ESPN, far surpassed the previous high of $205,000 paid for another signed Jordan rookie card in March 2024. It also eclipsed the $840,000 sale of a non-autographed version of the same card in 2021.
While not the highest sale ever for a Jordan card, that title remains with a one-of-one 2003–04 Upper Deck Ultimate Collection Logoman card that fetched $2.928 million; this latest sale ranks as the third-highest public sale of a Michael Jordan trading card to date.
The auction marks Joopiter’s debut in the world of sports memorabilia. Known primarily for its luxury and fashion collectibles, Joopiter is now expanding into high-end sports items.
“We are excited to debut in the world of sports collectibles, largely in response to enthusiasm from our global community of collectors,” said Caitlin Donovan, global head of sales at Joopiter.
“With a focus on rare and iconic sports memorabilia, infused with the rich history that makes these pieces truly special, we look forward to bringing this community unique and significant pieces of sports history.”
The red-hot market for Michael Jordan collectibles continues to break records. Earlier this year, a 1984 Chicago Bulls preseason jersey worn by Jordan sold for $4.215 million at Sotheby’s, making it the fifth-most-expensive NBA jersey ever auctioned.
With Joopiter entering the sports memorabilia space and collectors showing no signs of slowing down, industry watchers expect even more historic sales to follow.
