Simone Biles fought through an injury to top the qualifiers. The iconic gymnast briefly left the competition due to leg pain, ESPN reported. After returning, Biles posted the highest all-around score. The 27-year-old finished ahead of fellow American Suni Lee, moving closer to winning gold at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Simone Biles began her qualifiers with a beam routine but had to leave due to injury. After a short break on the sidelines, she came back to the floor to complete her routine, energized by Taylor Swift’s “Ready for It” playing in the stadium.
Landi, Biles’ long-time coach, emphasized the support from the coaching staff, saying, “We told her to remind herself, like she’s capable of doing it. She knows she’s got it and it’s OK, and then she did. So really excited for her.”

Simone Biles Impressive Scores Across the Board
Despite her injury, Biles posted impressive scores:
- Floor Exercise: 14.600
- Vault: 15.800 for the Yurchenko double pike and successfully landed the Cheng vault, though she was seen limping afterward.
- Balance Beam: 14.733
- Uneven Bars: 14.433
Her combined score of 59.566 was the highest in the competition. Landi praised her performance, stating, “It was pretty amazing, 59.5. Not perfect, so she can improve even … [but] just really good.”
Biles is set to compete against her fellow American, Suni Lee, in the all-around finals on August 1. Lee, who won the all-around gold at the 2020 Tokyo Games, will face off against Biles, the 2016 Rio Olympics champion.
This showdown will determine which of the two will become the first gymnast in almost 60 years to win two Olympic all-around titles.
Strong Performances from Team USA
Two-time U.S. Olympian Jordan Chiles also had a strong performance in the qualifiers, finishing third behind Biles and Lee. However, Olympic rules allow only two athletes per country to advance to the finals, leaving Chiles out of the competition despite her top-three finish.
As Biles moves forward to the finals, her remarkable comeback from injury demonstrates her determination and fortitude, setting the stage for an exciting showdown in Paris.
