Snoop Dogg Faces Backlash Over Comments on LGBTQ+ Characters in Children’s Films

Hip-hop icon Snoop Dogg has come under fire for remarks about the inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters in children’s movies. Speaking on the It’s Giving podcast hosted by Sarah Fontenot, the 53-year-old rapper recounted his experience watching Pixar’s Lightyear with his grandson, and said the film left him uncomfortable.
In the 2022 Toy Story spinoff, voiced by Chris Evans, a same-sex couple briefly shares a kiss on screen. Snoop told listeners the moment sparked unexpected questions from his grandson.
“What you see is what you see, and they’re putting it everywhere,” he said. “Why my grandson in the middle of the movie like, ‘Papa Snoop, how she have a baby with a woman?’… I didn’t come in for this sh*t. I just came to watch the goddamn movie.”
The rapper added that the scene left him unsettled: “So it’s like, f**k me, I’m scared to go to the movies now. Like, y’all throwing me in the middle of sh*t that I don’t have an answer for… We have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer.”
His comments quickly spread across social media, where critics accused him of homophobia. Some users accused the veteran artist of inconsistency, claiming he has shifted his stance on LGBTQ+ issues depending on public sentiment. “Biggest sellout in Hip-Hop,” one post read, drawing attention to his past remarks from the 1990s and his later support of same-sex marriage.
The controversy has reignited debate around Lightyear, which faced international backlash upon release. The film was banned in countries including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait over its depiction of a lesbian couple.
Variety previously reported that the scene was initially cut but later reinstated after Pixar animators criticized Disney for censoring LGBTQ+ representation and pushed back against then-CEO Bob Chapek’s handling of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill.
Despite the criticism, Snoop Dogg has not issued further comments on the matter.
