In a move aimed at strengthening the cultural impact and educational reach of jazz in communities, WBGO Radio, a well-known public jazz broadcaster, has officially partnered with the Jazz Power Initiative (JPI), a nonprofit organization focused on jazz arts education and performance. This collaboration highlights a mutual goal to preserve, improve, and widen access to jazz.
WBGO (88.3 FM), based in Newark, New Jersey, has been a key player in jazz broadcasting since 1948. It offers curated music, public affairs programming, and cultural storytelling to audiences locally and around the world. The station aims to educate, entertain, and inspire listeners. It showcases the variety and richness of jazz and blues, which emerged from Black American cultural innovation.
The Jazz Power Initiative was founded in 2003. It supports this goal with strong arts education programs that benefit thousands of students, educators, and community members every year. JPI’s programs, which include youth vocal and instrumental training as well as intergenerational community concerts, play a crucial role in artistic development in underserved neighborhoods.
A Partnership Based on Shared Values and Vision
At the core of this partnership is a commitment to increasing jazz education, reaching new audiences, and promoting cultural equity. Recent announcements state that WBGO President & CEO Steven A. Williams will be honored at JPI’s 2026 Syncopated Celebration, an event that recognizes leaders who have enhanced jazz’s cultural presence.
According to reports, Williams, who has led WBGO with an emphasis on community engagement and cultural preservation, described this honor as significant, reflecting not just his personal journey but “the rich cultural legacy that jazz continues to inspire in all of us.”
“This celebration embodies the spirit of creativity, community, and collaboration that defines jazz,” Williams said in comments shared by partner outlets, stressing the shared values of WBGO and JPI.
Supporting the Next Generation of Jazz Innovators
The partnership between WBGO and JPI is set to create more opportunities for young musicians and educators. By using WBGO’s broadcast reach alongside JPI’s educational programming, the partnership hopes to grow new audiences. It also hopes to develop the next generation of jazz innovators.
Through coordinated events, workshops, and content initiatives, the organizations plan to highlight emerging talent and reinforce jazz’s status as a living, evolving art form.
Dr. Eli Yamin, JPI co-founder and Artistic Director, has long supported the transformative power of jazz education. In past statements regarding the organization’s work, Yamin emphasized the importance of hands-on learning and community ties. This is in keeping the art form alive for future generations, values that deeply align with WBGO’s public media mission.
Cultural Preservation Meets Public Media Excellence
This partnership symbolizes an important blend of cultural care and media influence. WBGO is the only full-time jazz radio station in the New York metropolitan area. It has a worldwide digital presence, providing a strong platform for promoting JPI’s mission. At the same time, JPI’s long-standing commitment to accessible jazz education enhances WBGO’s ability to connect listeners with real pathways to music creation and appreciation.
As jazz continues to grow and inspire across generations and locations, the WBGO–Jazz Power Initiative partnership serves as a model for how media organizations and community arts groups can work together. Especially to maintain and broaden cultural heritage in ways that are inclusive, educational, and aspirational.
