Wendy Williams Plans Legal Action Over Court-Ordered Guardianship

Wendy Williams Reportedly Fails Medical Evaluations, Guardianship Set to Continue

Television and radio personality Wendy Williams is preparing to take legal action over her ongoing court-ordered guardianship, which her attorney, Joe Tacopina, describes as “very scary” and “despicably slow.”

Speaking to TMZ on Tuesday (July 22) after celebrating Williams’ 61st birthday in New York City, Tacopina said he intends to file a lawsuit against those responsible for the guardianship arrangement, which has been in place since 2022.

“Those responsible for her status, basically her incarceration, will be held accountable. There’s no question about that,” Tacopina said. “My goal right now and the priority is to get her back home, whatever home is, where she can come and go as she pleases.”

Williams has been under a court-appointed guardianship since March 2022 due to alleged concerns over her ability to manage her health and finances. Under the arrangement, all decisions concerning her personal and financial affairs are controlled by her guardian, Sabrina Morrissey.

Tacopina, a high-profile attorney known for representing celebrities in criminal and civil cases, clarified that he is not a guardianship lawyer by trade. However, he said the circumstances of Williams’ case compelled him to get involved.

“Wendy’s Wendy,” he added. “We’ve had conversations over the course of six months. She’s the same Wendy Williams we know from TV. She’s in control of her faculties and it sickens me. This is not just a case—it’s a cause.”

Williams also addressed the matter briefly on camera, stating, “I just had a birthday and I’m still in a guardianship—if that doesn’t say enough, I don’t know what does.”

Last month, Williams’ ex-husband, Kevin Hunter, filed a $250 million lawsuit against her guardian and the guardianship arrangement, claiming he was acting on her behalf.

Tacopina noted that since taking on the case, he has been contacted by others in similar legal situations. However, his attention remains solely on Williams for now.

“Once you’re in the vortex of the guardianship proceeding, it’s hard to get out—even if you’re like Wendy,” he said.

No formal legal filing has been made public at the time of reporting. Williams remains under guardianship, and any changes to her status will require court approval.
