Aggies Honor The Late Rev. Jesse Jackson With a Day of Service

In a tribute based on action rather than ceremony, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University has announced a university-wide Day of Service to honor the life and legacy of its distinguished alumnus, Rev. Jesse Jackson.
Chancellor James R. Martin II officially proclaimed April 23, 2026, as the Rev. Jesse Louis Jackson Sr. ’64 Day of Service. This day encourages students, alumni, faculty, staff, and supporters worldwide to volunteer and improve their communities.
A Living Tribute to a Historic Legacy
Instead of limiting remembrance to speeches or memorials, the university connects Jackson’s legacy directly to service, a cause that defined much of his public life.
Jackson graduated from North Carolina A&T in 1964 and became one of the most influential civil rights leaders in modern American history. He worked closely with Martin Luther King Jr., founded the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, and ran for the Democratic nomination for U.S. president twice. From reports, his advocacy included voting rights, economic justice, access to education, and racial equality.
According to the university proclamation, the Day of Service aims to recognize Jackson’s “profound impact and lifelong commitment to advancing human dignity, opportunity, and justice for underserved communities.”
Chancellor Martin: “Do What Aggies Do”
According to reports, in announcing the observance, Chancellor Martin stressed that Jackson’s example should inspire action.
“He served this university, he served the country, he served the world,” Martin said. “We have an opportunity on that day to remember him, but also to do what Aggies do, which is make the world better.”
This message aligns with the long-standing mission of North Carolina A&T, the largest historically Black university in the United States and a leader in Black academic excellence.
Why This Matters Beyond Campus
The choice to honor Jackson through service shows a broader shift in how institutions keep legacies alive. This involves not only remembering leaders but also continuing their unfinished work:
- For students, the observance provides a practical lesson in leadership.
- For alumni, it serves as a reminder of their purpose.
- For communities, it can lead to thousands of volunteer hours focused on real needs.
In a time when civic participation and community trust are vital issues across the United States, North Carolina A&T’s initiative sends a clear message. The message that true greatness is measured not just by titles, but by improving lives.
Jesse Jackson’s Enduring Influence
Jackson died in February 2026 at age 84. Tributes arrived from former presidents, faith leaders, activists, and global figures who recognized his decades of advocacy. Public memorial services in Chicago featured major national figures, highlighting the extent of his influence.
One of the most fitting honors now comes from the campus that helped shape him.
The Bigger Lesson
North Carolina A&T’s Day of Service turns remembrance into responsibility. It encourages a new generation to consider not only what Jackson achieved but also what they will do with their opportunities.
That may be the most powerful legacy of all.
