Sharon Tucker Becomes Fort Wayne’s First Black Mayor

Sharon Tucker, a city councilwoman from Fort Wayne, Indiana, has been selected as the new mayor of the state’s second-most populous city. 

This selection marks a significant moment for the city, as Tucker becomes its first black leader and only the second woman to hold the position.

Tucker’s appointment comes after the unfortunate death of Mayor Tom Henry in March, which left the mayor’s office vacant.

 As a Democrat, Tucker will now step into this role until December 31, 2027.

The selection process was competitive, with seven candidates vying for the position during the party caucus. 

Among them was Indiana Democratic House leader state Rep. Phil GiaQuinta. 

Tucker was elected in the second round of voting during a Democratic caucus when she met the requirement of 50% of the votes plus one.

The local Democratic party expressed excitement about having “Mayor Tucker at the helm leading Fort Wayne into the future.

” They added, “Today, Mayor Tucker proved that she has the energy and support of our party, and we can’t wait to support her as she works to continue moving our community forward together.”

Tucker is expected to be sworn into office sometime this week.

Multiple members of the late Mayor Tom Henry’s family were present at the caucus. Both Tom Henry’s daughter and nephew hugged Tucker after her caucus victory. 

His nephew, Adam Henry, who has spoken on behalf of the Henry family since the mayor’s death, said “we support Mayor Tucker1.”

Overall, the community seems to be rallying behind Tucker and looking forward to her leadership.
