Tems Paved the Way for Global Recognition of African Female Artists—Tyla

In a recent interview on Kiss Fresh FM, South African singer Tyla lauded Tems for her significant role in paving the way for African female artists on the global stage. 

Tyla, who gained international fame with her hit single ‘Water’ in 2023, expressed her admiration for Tems and gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with her1.

Tyla described Tems as an “amazing” singer and a “force” in the music industry

“She has opened so many doors for us,” Tyla said, referring to the opportunities that have arisen for African female artists following Tems’ success. 

The duo collaborated on a song that Tyla described as “beautiful” with a “beautiful message,” made by and for girls.

Tems graciously accepted the praise and expressed her belief that Tyla is also inspiring young South African girls and others around the world with her music. 

“Man, it is an honour, I am very very, 100% sure that she’s inspiring many South African babe, many girls around the world as well”, she said.

Tyla’s single ‘Water’ entered the top 10 in sixteen countries, including the United Kingdom and the United States, and was the first song by a South African soloist to enter the US Billboard Hot 100 in 55 years. 

In February, Tyla won her first Grammy Award in the ‘Best African Music Performance’ category for ‘Water ’.

Tems, on the other hand, won her first-ever Grammy award in 2023. 

Her success has not only opened doors for African female artists but also set a new standard in the music industry.

Tems’ Journey to Global Recognition

Certainly! Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has had a remarkable journey to global recognition.

 Born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, her life is a testament to her talent and determination.

Tems’ breakthrough came in 2020 when she featured on Wizkid’s song “Essence,” from his album “Made In Lagos”. 

The song was a hit, catching the attention of fans both at home and abroad. 

A remix version featuring Canadian pop artist Justin Bieber was released in 2021, and the song reached its highest peak at the ninth spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 list.

Since then, Tems has collaborated with international superstars, including Rihanna, Drake, Future, and Beyoncé. 

Her unique voice and style have not only won her fans worldwide but also earned her a Grammy award in 2023.

Speaking at the Essence Festival in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the United States, on July 2, 2023, Tems described her life as a testimony. 

“You know, my life is a testimony. I guess, for those who don’t understand, I’m from Lagos, Nigeria,” she said.

Tems’ journey from Lagos to the global spotlight is indeed a testimony to her talent, hard work, and the power of music to transcend borders and cultures. 

Her success has opened doors for other African female artists and set a new standard in the music industry.
