The ability to travel visa-free is a significant advantage, and the strength of a passport often determines this freedom. In Africa, some nations stand out for offering their citizens extensive visa-free access. 

This ranking sheds light on the African passports that open the most doors globally, highlighting the diplomatic efforts and international relationships that contribute to travel ease. 

These rankings reveal which countries have made significant strides in enhancing their citizens’ mobility and access the world. 

The latest data on passport strength in Africa highlights the varying levels of visa-free access for citizens across the continent. 

The rankings are based on the number of destinations passport holders can access without a visa or with a visa on arrival.

Top Performers of Visa-Free Countries

Seychelles:  Leading the list, Seychelles offers its citizens without visa access to 153 destinations.

Mauritius:  Following closely, Mauritius citizens enjoy no visa or visa-on-arrival access to 146 destinations.

South Africa: South African passport holders can travel to 105 destinations without needing a visa in advance.

Middle Ranking:

Botswana: Botswana ranks decently with 86 destinations accessible without a visa or with a visa on arrival.

Namibia: Namibians can visit 78 destinations without needing a prior visa.

Lower Rankings:

Kenya and Tanzania:  Both countries allow their citizens no visa or visa-on-arrival access to 72 destinations.

Nigeria: Nigerian passport holders have no visa or visa-on-arrival access to 46 destinations.

African nations with lower visa-free scores face challenges in global mobility, which impacts travel for business, tourism, and personal reasons.

 Efforts to improve diplomatic relations and agreements could enhance the strength of these passports.

Most Desirable Passports Based on Visa-Free Travel

Japan and Singapore lead the world with the most powerful passports, offering visa-free entry to 192 countries. German and South Korean passports also rank highly.

Interestingly, a 2015 survey revealed that British nationality was the most desired additional citizenship, preferred by 20.4 percent of respondents. The cost of a passport does not always correlate with its power.

While some expensive passports are powerful, others may require more working hours to afford. For example, in Mexico, one needs to work 266 hours to buy a passport.
